HACKENSACK, N.J. —
The St. Francis women's basketball team picked up its first Northeast Conference road win Saturday, knocking off Fairleigh Dickinson, 68-50, in Stratis Arena.
The Red Flash (8-6, 3-0) rallied from down as many as 15 points in the first half to knock off the Knights (7-7, 2-1). Alli Williams stuffed the stat sheet with 21 points, 14 rebounds and missed her second-career triple double by one steal. Nickia Gibbs register a season-high 19 points on 9 of 14 shooting as the Flash cruised in the second half. Danielle Pankey posted 15 points to lead the Knights while Erika Livermore added 13 points and 12 rebounds but it was not enough.
The Flash stormed out of the gates in the second half extending their lead to as many as 12 early, but FDU continued to battle and got the SFU lead back under 10.
The Flash kept their cool and rolled to the win as Gibbs notched 13 points in the second half.
Livermore was limited to four second-half rebounds, but Pankey notched 11 second-half points to keep the Knights in the game. Williams also had five assists.
The Knights jumped all over SFU in the first half and jumped out to a 17-2 lead as the Flash struggled from the field and made just two of their first 14 shots. The 15-point advantage for the Knights with 11:56 was short lived as SFU rallied and erased the deficit in under 10 minutes and took a 29-28 lead into the locker room.
Williams turned the half around and finished the half with seven points, seven rebounds and four steals.
The Red Flash returns to action Monday with a noon tipoff at Monmouth.
Pitt-Bradford 68, Mount Aloysius 63: At Bradford, Mount Aloysius was unable to hold onto a late second-half lead and fell to Pitt-Bradford.
The Lady Mounties were up 36-30 at intermission and were able to extend their lead to 13 points with just over five minutes to play.
But an Allison Osborne 3-pointer sparked a Pitt-Bradford run that allowed the Panthers to tie the game at 63 all with :57 seconds to play.
A Mount Aloysius offensive foul on the ensuing possession led to Pitt-Bradford grabbing the lead off of an Alicia Kimmel jumper.
Mount Aloysius had an opportunity to tie the game, but their shot attempt came up short. A pair of Pitt-Bradford free throws set the final score.
Lindsy Sammarco scored 17 points for Mount Aloysius. Becky Bard added 16 points, and Alexis Restori had 12 points.
Kimmel led Pitt-Bradford with 24 points.
Men’s results
Mount Aloysius 78, Pitt-Bradford 63: At Bradford, Mount Aloysius maintained sole possession of first place in the AMCC with a road win over Pitt-Bradford.
The Mounties held a 43-40 halftime edge thanks to superb play by senior guard Demetrius Davis, who had 20 points at the break.
Davis went 5-for-9 from behind the arc and was 3-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final minutes of play. He finished the contest with 22 points. Teammate Jeff Stem led the Mounties with game-high 25 points, while Tanner Thomas added 10 points.
Although Mount Aloysius allowed Pitt-Bradford’s Brandon McCleaster to score 22 points, they held the Panthers’ top scorers, Tyler Ferguson and Keith Burgess, to just three field goals apiece.
“We played some of our best defense tonight,” Mount Aloysius Coach Lance Loya said. “We took six charges, and really got their scorers in foul trouble.”
Mount Aloysius shot 52.9 percent from the field and held a 32-29 rebounding edge.
Fairleigh Dickinson 79, St. Francis 69, OT: At Hackensack, N.J., Lonnie Robinson paced Fairleigh Dickinson with 17 points as the Knights beat St. Francis in overtime in Northeast Conference action.
Fairleigh Dickinson (7-9, 2-2) led 61-60 heading into the final minute of regulation, but Umar Shannon made a layup and Stephen Whyatt added two free throws to put St. Francis (1-14, 1-3) ahead 64-61 with 33 seconds left.
After Robinson missed a 3-point try, Mustafaa Jones grabbed the rebound and sank a trey to tie it at 64 with 20 seconds left in regulation. Shannon missed a jumper at the other end with 4 seconds remaining, and the teams proceeded to overtime.
The Knights got consecutive three-point plays from Xavier Harris and Sidney Sanders Jr. early in overtime. Earl Brown sank a free throw and a layup for the Red Flash, but then Sanders’ layup sparked a 9-0 Fairleigh Dickinson run to close out the scoring.
Community College of Beaver County 148, Penn Highlands 66: At Monaca, the defending WPCC champions and Division II perennial power, Community College of Beaver County, defeated Penn Highlands.
Grant Speigle led the Black Bears with 19 points and five rebounds while Jermaine Graves and Jordan Swauger contributed 16 and 13 points, respectively.
All 10 CCBC players scored in double figures.
