The Pitt-Johnstown wrestling team has won six consecutive matches.
The win streak couldn’t come at a better time for the No. 11 Mountain Cats.
Pitt-Johnstown travels to Newberry (S.C.) College today to participate in four matches over the next two days as part of the 2013 Super Region I Duals.
It’s an event UPJ used to own, but Newberry – the No. 4 team in the National Wrestling Coaches Association NCAA Division II rankings – has dominated in recent years.
“The regional duals is big. It’s a big event for us,” UPJ coach Pat Pecora said following his team’s surprisingly easy 33-10 win over nationally ranked Ashland on Friday. “No. 1, because we’ll meet Newberry and we haven’t beaten them in five years. They’ve stolen our regional title from us and we want to win it back.”
Pecora’s Mountain Cats (7-2) are ranked third in Region 1 and open the duals at 7 p.m. against Newberry.
The Mountain Cats follow with meets on Saturday against Limestone (8:30 a.m.), Belmont-Abbey (10:30 a.m.) and No. 20 UNC-Pembroke at 12:30 p.m.
A total of 14 teams will compete at the duals, including No. 7 Kutztown and ninth-ranked West Liberty.
For UPJ, Summerhill native Dave Fogle (133 pounds) and Travis McKillop (184) are each ranked eighth nationally in their respective weight classes and first in the Super Region I rankings.
Dave Cawley (141) and Jack Bachman (149) are ranked third. Gary Lantz (174) is ranked fourth.
