Westmont, Penn Cambria beaten in District 6-AA duals

HUNTINGDON — Westmont Hilltop won its first match in the District 6 Class AA Duals but was eliminated by Huntingdon in the quarterfinal round.

The seventh-seeded Hilltoppers (8-3) beat No. 11 Claysburg-Kimmel 60-18 in the opening match at Huntingdon.

“It was a very unique environment when you’re wrestling at a neutral site,” Westmont coach Matt Beaujon said. “But it was odd for everybody. We came out hot and wrestled with a lot of emotion. We went after them from the first whistle to the last.”

Mike Walsh started the Hilltoppers off with a pin and Mark Barbera scored a last-second takedown for a victory that put Westmont up 9-0.

“That kind of set things off in the right direction for us,” Beaujon said.

Things didn’t go as smoothly against No. 2 Huntingdon, as the Bearcats beat the Hilltoppers 49-22.

“They’re a tough team,” Beaujon said. “I thought we still went out and were aggressive. They’re a tough team from top to bottom. You have to put 14 good efforts out there to beat them. Not that we didn’t put forth good efforts. We went out and hit what we knew. Now we’ll get in the room and work for individuals.”

Huntingdon advances to Saturday’s semifinal round at Tyrone Area High School.

n Penns Valley 52, Penn Cambria 25: In Mifflintown, Penn Cambria’s wrestlers got the experience that coach Todd Niebauer hoped for, if not the result, in the District 6 Class AA Duals on Tuesday.

The No. 12 Panthers were beaten 52-25 by No. 5 Penns Valley, which went on to upset No. 4 Juniata in the quarterfinal match at Juniata.

“All in all it was a good experience for the kids,” Niebauer said. “I knew it would be a tall task for us to win. Some of my guys stepped up and some others didn’t get it done. They have some kids with some pretty good records.”

Niebauer said two wrestlers in particular stood out for him.

“Jon Wilkinson, a kid that weighs in at 220 and moves up to 285, he pinned their kid,” Niebauer said. “He looked good. Mike Eckenrode looked real good for me (at 138 pounds).”

The Panthers bow out of the dual-meet tournament with an 11-9 record.

“They just had a little more firepower than we did,” Niebauer said. “We’ll take it as experience and move ahead."
