Local sports briefs 5-11-2010

NANTY GLO — HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Blacklick 13, Penns Manor 1

NANTY GLO – Blacklick Valley senior Lauren Wiegman tossed her third no-hitter of the season while going 2-for-3 to lead the Vikings to a five-inning win.

Hailee Scott was 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and Megan Thomas was 3-for-4 with a double. Jenna Skubik and Olivia McClain each went 2-for-3 for the hosts.

Windber 8, Rockwood 5

WINDBER – Winning pitcher Jill Penatzer went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and an RBI to lead Windber.

Teammate Kayla Kormanik was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs while Brooke Schreyer went 2-for-3 and scored. Erin Valinsky had an RBI triple.

Rockwood starter Leah Clay went 2-for-4 and scored a run.

Chestnut Ridge 9, Everett 6

NEW PARIS – Alana Weyant’s two-run home run led Chestnut Ridge while teammate Jessalyn Neatrour went 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

Stefanie McCoy was 3-for-4 with an RBI, Tiffany Cingerman doubled and Makayla Dunlap went 2-for-2.

Bishop Carroll 9, Harmony 3

WESTOVER – Lindsy Sammarco hit two doubles and drove in five runs as Bishop Carroll beat host Harmony in a non-league game.

Krista Krug had three singles and two RBIs for the Huskies (10-7).

Lindsey Neff singled twice for Harmony (1-10).

Richland 16, Meyersdale 1

Ella Tessari struck out eight and walked none to lead Richland in a four-inning win over visiting Meyersdale.

Nicki Mihalik was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two doubles while Clarissa Snopko was 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored for the Rams. Teammates Maura Koshute, Lauren Keffer and Maddie Mahood each went 2-for-3.

Meyersdale got a hit each from Danielle Hetrick, Amanda Aldridge and Brittania Oaks. Oaks scored the only Meyersdale run.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Ferndale 9, Johnstown 4

J.R. Gartrell’s three-run homer in the third inning highlighted Ferndale’s win over visiting Johnstown.

Ian Helsel was 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Ian Havener went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Yellow Jackets.

Johnstown’s Josh Barto had a two-run homer in the fourth while Jerell Thornton was 3-for-3 with a two-run shot in the fifth.

Forest Hills 5, Bishop Guilfoyle 3

ST. MICHAEL – Chris Lazration had three hits, John Levi Ohler’s two hits included a three-run home run and Justin Gdula struck out nine to lead Forest Hills.

Bishop Guilfoyle’s Bill Beard went the distance, striking out 12 while delivering three hits. Batterymate A.J. Kitt had two hits and drove in two runs.

Portage 13, Cambria Heights 1

PORTAGE – Mike Sinosky, A.D. Maul and Zack Petrunak had two hits each to lead Portage.

Taylor Swires singled and his three-run, walk-off homer ended the game with none out in the bottom of the fifth.

Salisbury 3, Coneamaugh Valley 1

SALISBURY – Brandon Miller went 2-for-2 with two doubles, scored twice and drove in a run to lead Salisbury.

Nathan Hutzell had two hits for the Elks, who got a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts from Ryan Vogt and Mike Miller.

Conemaugh Valley’s Jimmy Britton struck out seven and had a hit.

Somerset 10, Allegany (Md.) 5

SOMERSET – Drew Hemminger, Gunnar Smith and Brent Barron had two RBIs each to lead Somerset.

Josh Beistel had two hits for the Eagles and Zach Helsley scored twice.

Conemaugh Township 12, Berlin 4

BERLIN – Winning pitcher Mike Lysic went 4-for-4 with four RBIs to pace Conemaugh Township.

The Indians’ Jordan Shroyer was 2-for-4 with a double while Joe Roman and Dan Blank each drove in two runs.

Laurel Valley 9, Blairsville 1

BLAIRSVILLE – Laurel Valley’s John Jones went the distance, striking out 10, walking one and hitting a two-run double in the third inning.

Batterymate Adam Torrence was 2-for-3 with three RBIs while Brett Marabito and Ian Taggert each had two hits and two RBIs.

Everett 6, Chestnut Ridge 5

NEW PARIS – Troy Morral’s second-inning home run highlighted Everett’s win.

Zeke Jays and Larry Grimes had two hits each for the Warriors.

Lions pitcher Judd Bussard took the loss. Bussard, Matt Amick, Nick Dumin and Brad Hengst had two hits each for Chestnut Ridge, which committed five errors. 

Richland 14, Meyersdale 2

Ryan Sylvia went 2-for-2 with three runs and three RBIs to lead Richland over visiting Meyersdale.

Austin Urban, Dan Gray, Brett Morganstern and Travis Gelles scored two runs each for the Rams while Sylvia, Zach Solarczyck and Morganstern had two hits each.

Stephen McKenzie had two hits for the visitors.

SOFTBALL

IUP in NCAA tournament

INDIANA – The IUP softball team has received a bid to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region tournament and the fifth-seeded Crimson Hawks will take on No. 4 seed West Virginia Wesleyan in an opening round game Friday at Bloomsburg.

Game time is set for 1:30.

The Crimson Hawks enter the NCAA tournament with a record of 35-10, tying the 2001 team for the most wins in school history. IUP is making its first appearance in the tournament since 2005 and is in the field for the seventh time overall, having won nine postseason games in its previous six trips.

West Virginia Wesleyan (43-11) won the WVIAC regular season and tournament championship and has won 17 of its past 18 games.



GOLF

Red Flash head to Notre Dame

LORETTO – The Northeast Conference champion St. Francis men’s golf team will travel to South Bend, Ind. to participate in the Division I Men’s Golf Championships, which will be hosted by Notre Dame at The Warren Golf Course, the NCAA selection committee announced on Monday night.

The Red Flash will be the 14th seed in a 14-team field that also features No. 1 Stanford, No. 2 Florida, No. 3 Florida State, No. 4 Duke and No. 5 LSU. The six 54-hole regional tournaments will take place May 20-22.

St. Francis earned the Northeast Conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA by winning the league title.

This will be the second appearance in the NCAA championships for the Red Flash. St. Francis won its first league title in 2006 under the guidance of longtime head coach Bob Hahn.

Current head coach Nick Wheeler was a senior on that squad.
