JOHNSTOWN —
Two area football players have made the decision to continue their football careers at the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.
Greater Johnstown’s Gervon Simon along with United’s Stefan Moreau will join the Long Gray Line as cadets next fall.
In the case of Simon, who committed on Thursday, Army was off his radar when he first started looking at schools but quickly pushed itself to the front.
“When I first started the recruiting process, I had no intentions of considering Army but as time went on and they recruited me and I heard from different people of how great of an opportunity this would be for me,” Simon said. “I realized Army was right for me. The more and more I researched, the more and more I liked Army. It’s a great opportunity. It’s the right place for me to go to continue my football career and get my education.”
Simon was a dual-threat quarterback at Greater Johnstown, passing for 1,752 yards and 19 touchdowns while rushing for 533 yards and nine scores. He’s projected as a quarterback, but could also be used as a running back or slot back in Army’s run-heavy offense.
He’s also a member of the Trojans’ wrestling program. His parents are mother Stephanie and step-father Quenteen Robinson, and father Geroy Simon of Vancouver.
Simon’s parents, along with coach Tony Penna Jr. all played vital roles in giving him this opportunity.
“Coach Penna has always been by my side from my freshman year through my senior year,” Simon said. “I have to thank Coach Penna and my family. My mom, my step-dad and my dad have always pushed me about my grades and about being in honors gifted classes. It’s all paid off.”
