JOHNSTOWN — Johnstown boys basketball coach Neil Cobaugh believes the tough lessons learned during his team’s 60-50 loss to visiting State College on Wednesday night will pay dividends during the postseason.

The District 6 Class AAA Trojans held a nine-point halftime advantage and had capitalized on a cool first half from the field by the Quad-A Little Lions.

But State College used a big second half to erase the deficit. The Lions benefited from a near perfect showing at the free throw line late to make the margin of victory a bit deceiving.

“Adding that team to our schedule helps us a lot,” Cobaugh said after the Trojans lost for only the second time in 18 games. “They’re one of the top Quad-A teams in the state of Pennsylvania. That helps a lot and prepares us for the physical play we may see down the line and how games may be officiated. It will help us for the playoffs. It’s a great test.”

Hit batsman lifts Pirates over Cubs
Matt Hague was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their 11th straight loss with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.
Hague took a 96 mph fastball from Dolis (2-4) in the back near the shoulder blade, scoring Jose Tabata and eliciting an incredulous look to the sky by the Cubs reliever.
