Area basketball in brief

Boys

Westmont Hilltop 71

Somerset 60

SOMERSET – Westmont Hilltop overcame Somerset’s quick start with a strong second quarter and the Hilltoppers won a back-and-forth LHAC game on the Golden Eagles’ court.

“They came out early and hit three 3’s in the first,” Westmont coach Dave Roman Jr. said. “We made an adjustment on how we were guarding their triple handloffs. I thought we did a great job of bouncing back in that second quarter.”

Somerset (7-5) outscored Westmont 22-15 in the first quarter but Hilltop (10-2) used a 24-12 second-quarter advantage to lead 39-34 at intermission.

“It went back and forth the whole game,” Somerset coach Scott Close said. “Even the third quarter, it was down to a four-point game with them leading. They converted, especially from the foul line, and we did not.

“We gave up some easy buckets in the fourth quarter for them to open it up.”

Westmont’s Quentin Brandon had 18 points, 14 rebounds and five assists. Stephen Flick had 20 points and eight rebounds, and Mike Vliet had 18 points and eight boards. Brady Hamer had six assists, and Joe Glennon had five assists.

“They run that 1-3-1 aggressive halfcourt, sometimes fullcourt (defense),” Roman said. “Our guys did a great job of attacking it. We stuck to the game plan. We made the extra pass. We assisted on 18 of 36 field goals. We did a great job of sharing the ball.”

Somerset’s Jake Close had 21 points. Justin Harshberger and Brent Barron each tallied 11 points for the Eagles.

“It was our inability to score from inside the paint and from the foul line that was the difference in the game,” Close said.

Roman was pleased by his team’s composure.

“We only had eight turnovers against that pressure,” Roman said. “We did a great job of protecting the basketball.”

  • james throws Pirates pick up fourth straight victory

There were times earlier in his career when James McDonald would run into trouble and innings would slow to a crawl. Even worse, runners would disappear, and not in a good way.
Too much thinking. Not enough attacking.
