ALTOONA —
Ten local wrestlers advanced to the semifinals of the District 6 Class AAA tournament on Friday night at the Altoona Area High School Field House.
Westmont Hilltop had seven of the local wrestlers still in the hunt for a title while Greater Johnstown had three.
“I think we wrestled hard,” said Westmont coach Matt Beaujon, whose team is competing in Class AAA for the first time this year. “We went after them. Tomorrow, we intend to do the same thing.”
Hilltoppers advancing to today’s semifinal round are: Josh Polacek (119 pounds), Mike Walsh (125), Tanner Hough (130), Tanner Patton (145), Ryan Burnheimer (189), Don Shovestull (215) and Josh Duplin (285).
The Hilltoppers, who finished second to Central Mountain in the District 6 Dual-Meet Championships, are in fourth-place, 161⁄2 points behind surprise leader Bellefonte.
“We’re not worried about the team stuff,” Beaujon said. “We’re going to wrestle the semis with our seven guys and the guys in the wrestlebacks will go and wrestle their guys and get to work.
Westmont, which started the day with 13 wrestlers entered, has 12 returning today.
Greater Johnstown took just five wrestlers to the tournament but three of them – Malcolm Harris (125), William Leeth (130) and Gervon Simon (189) – reached the semifinal round.
Leeth, the sixth seed, upset third-seeded Andrew Greenawalt of Philipsburg-Osceola by a 6-2 score to reach the semifinals. Harris and Simon, who are seeded second in their respective weight classes, each won by decision.
