Ligonier Valley squads roll to sweep of tourney title games

LIGONIER — Using 18 points from girls tournament MVP Maddy Grimm and 15 points from boys tournament MVP Anthony Tutino, Ligonier Valley swept the championships at the Ligonier Valley Holiday Tournament Wednesday at Ligonier Valley High School.

The Ligonier Valley boys edged Derry Area 50-47 in the boys’ championship while Ligonier Valley’s girls knocked off unbeaten Portage 49-39 in the nightcap.

The Ligonier Valley girls (6-1) surged ahead of the Mustangs (6-1) in the third quarter, grabbing the lead on a lay-up by Grimm and stretching it as far as 10 points when Kyra Ludwig sank a pair of free throws to make it 34-24. Grimm scored six of her team-high 18 points during that 14-4 run.

Portage rallied with a jumper by Shelia Adams followed a 3-pointer from Kaitlyn Dividock to cut the lead to five. The Mustangs drew no closer than that.

A 3-pointer by Ludwig pushed the Rams’ lead to 37-29 to wrap up the third. Grimm scored eight points in the fourth as Ligonier Valley grew its lead to 14 points midway through the frame.

“They were coming out and hawking the ball,” Ligonier Valley girls coach Paul Dominic said. “We decided to start throwing over the top to the weak side a little bit. We hit a couple outside shots and that set the tone for the game.”

Portage’s Olivia McCabe led all scorers with 22 points.

Adams supplied seven for the Mustangs.

“I’m proud of the girls,” Portage coach Lance Hudak said. “We came to this tournament to get the chance to play a team as quality as Ligonier. It’s only going to make us better to play competition like this.”

In the girls consolation game, Greater Johnstown held an 11-5 lead after a quarter and steadily built on it as it downed Southmoreland 38-21. Brandi Young’s 15 points led the Greater

Johnstown attack a day after suffering a loss to Portage.

“When we met in the locker room, I told them: ‘The Good Lord gives us a new day. Let’s start fresh,’” Trojans coach Chuck DiFalco said. “Playing the caliber of teams that we’ve seen early, our record indicates that we’re young. But I’m glad that we got the W.”

  • james throws Pirates pick up fourth straight victory

There were times earlier in his career when James McDonald would run into trouble and innings would slow to a crawl. Even worse, runners would disappear, and not in a good way.
Too much thinking. Not enough attacking.

What do you think of the Johnstown Tomahawks name for the city's North American Hockey League team?

I like it
I don’t like it
It’s OK since the Jets and Chiefs were not available
I don’t care, hockey in Johnstown does not matter to me.
