Local Basketball Briefs 1-11-2011

JOHNSTOWN — High School Boys

Forest Hills 54, Westmont 44


Luke Gallaher scored 18 points to lead Forest Hills to victory at Westmont Hilltop on Monday night.

The Rangers improved to 7-3 with the victory.

Zack Drennen and Mike Vliet led the Hilltoppers (6-4) with 14 points each.

Central Cambria 48, Bishop Carroll 45

EBENSBURG – Zach Vigneault scored 21 points as Central Cambria edged host Bishop Carroll.

Zach Rodkey added 10 points for the Red Devils (5-5).

Curt Panick’s 16 points paced Bishop Carroll (5-4).

Bishop McCort 62, Homer-Center 50

Patrick O’Reilly scored 19 points and Nemo Trexler added 18 as host Bishop McCort beat Homer-Center in a non-conference matchup.

Homer-Center forward Craig Ciranni scored 31 points to go over the 1,000-point mark for his career, but it wasn’t enough for the Wildcats.

JCS 59, Calvary Baptist 32

HOLLSOPPLE – Jake Tuck led the way with 30 points and Johnstown Christian took its first victory of the season.

Kevin Shook added 15 points in the win.

Tyler Chambers had a dozen points to lead Calvary.

C.C. Christian 61, Great Commission 56

ALTOONA – A trio of Cambria County Christian players scored in double figures – including Dom Williams with 26 – as the Panthers defeated host Great Commission to remain unbeaten (8-0).

Tyler Berkebile added a dozen points and Jay Gary had 10 for the visitors.

The Bears (6-2) were led by 24 points from Mike Carrieri and 13 from Jonah Salyards.

High School Girls

Conemaugh Valley 45 Berlin 40


Conemaugh Valley knocked Berlin from the ranks of the unbeaten led by 15 points from Nikki Ledwich.

Abby Menett added 11 points and six rebounds for the Blue Jays (5-3) who also got six blocks from Carly Gruss and seven steals from Jamie Cekada.

Shelby Coughenour topped the Mountaineers (7-1) with 15 points.

Johnstown 48, Richland 36

Greater Johnstown held visiting Richland to 11 second-half points to pull away for a victory.

Tynesha Smith led the Trojans (7-3) with 12 rebounds and 12 points while Chartice Wyatt had a game-high 18 points to go along with eight rebounds and three blocks.

Katie Gehlmann scored 13 points for Richland (6-4).

Bishop McCort 53, Bedford 26

BEDFORD – Jill Kegg scored 11 points and Samantha Schultz had 10 as visiting Bishop McCort routed Bedford, which was held to single-digit scoring in all four quarters.

Blacklick Valley 66, Shanksville 49

NANTY GLO – Blacklick Valley was led by Danielle Lesso’s 14 points, Allison Verba’s 11 and Brooke Rhoades’ 10.

Kayla Stockenus had a game-high 17 points for Shanksville, which got 10 from Lauren Brewer.

Central Cambria 67, Cambria Heights 44

PATTON – Emily Wright led all scorers with 23 points while Taylor Swatsworth chipped in 14 and Breanne James added 12 in a road win for Central Cambria.

The Highlanders were led by 11 points from Carrie Weaver.

Forest Hills 71, Penn Cambria 27

SIDMAN – Forest Hills bounced back after its first loss of the season with a big win against visiting Penn Cambria.

Casey Gallaher scored a game-high 24 points, dished out four assists and had three steals to lead the Rangers (9-1), who also got 13 points and nine steals from Becky Bard, 11 points, eight rebounds and six blocks from Amy Wiesheier and nine rebounds from Jess DiFlauro.

Meyersdale 58, Ferndale 41

Alex Yutzy had 21 points and Katie Vena added 20 to lead Meyersdale to victory at Ferndale.

Elizabeth Chobany’s game-high 22 points topped the Yellow Jackets, who got 11 from from Gabby Kull.

Portage 81, Salisbury 22

PORTAGE – Emily Chobany had 18 points, Olivia McCabe added 12 and Kelsie Spaid and Kaitlyn Dividock scored 11 and 10, respectively, as Portage coasted past Salisbury-Elk Lick.

Chobany had 10 steals and six assists, McCabe had eight steals and grabbed six rebounds and Dividock added six assists.

Lydia Hale-Cooper led the Elks with 16 points.

Northern Cambria 47, Purchase Line 29

COMMODORE – Northern Cambria held host Purchase Line to seven points in the middle two quarters and Ashley Delfonso scored a game-high 16 points for the Colts.

Emily Stiles and Kelley Sedlock each scored 10 points for Northern Cambria (4-6).

Purchase Line’s Cassie Brocious and Karli Rorabaugh combined for 22 points.

Westmont 78, Somerset 39

SOMERSET – Westmont took an 18-2 first-quarter lead and never looked back en route to a victory on the road.

Alyssa Yewcic scored a game-high 26 points for the Hilltoppers while teammate Erin Rodgers added 13. Yewcic grabbed 11 rebounds and Gina Rievel handed out six assists.

Brooke Spangler’s 14 points led Somerset.

Windber 66, Shade 25

WINDBER – A 30-point outburst in the third quarter helped Windber roll over Shade.

The Ramblers (6-3) hit six 3-pointers in the frame while holding the Panthers to five points.

Cheyenne Feathers scored 15 points for Windber while Jill Penatzer had 12 points – all in the third quarter – three assists and four steals. Courtney Petrunak had eight points, six steals and five rebounds.

Chelsey Pongrac led Shade with 11 points.

    There were times earlier in his career when James McDonald would run into trouble and innings would slow to a crawl. Even worse, runners would disappear, and not in a good way.
    Too much thinking. Not enough attacking.

    Paige Lumley was on an emotional roller coaster and seeing silver on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Richland senior had state record jumps  twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,
    1¾ inches.
    Defending state champion, second-seeded  junior Lanae Newsome of Brookville, won with a jump of 40-3½.

    Matt Dull finished his athletic career with his best on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Chestnut Ridge senior ran a career-best time of 38.12 to finish second in the 300 hurdles final, also setting another school record.

    Matt Hague was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their 11th straight loss with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.
    Hague took a 96 mph fastball from Dolis (2-4) in the back near the shoulder blade, scoring Jose Tabata and eliciting an incredulous look to the sky by the Cubs reliever.
