JOHNSTOWN — Wrestling

No. 11 Pitt-Johnstown

knocks off No. 20 Kutztown

KUTZTOWN – Dave Cawley pinned fourth-ranked Evan Yenolevich in the 141-pound match as part of Pitt-Johnstown’s 24-17 victory at Kutztown on Wednesday.

Eleventh-ranted Pitt-Johnstown (1-1) finished the match with three pins. The others were by Evan Link at 125 and Travis McKillop at 184.

“Pins were the difference,” Mountain Cats coach Pat Pecora said.

UPJ opened up a 15-4 lead on No. 2 Kutztown (0-1) with Link’s pin at 2:19, Cawley’s pin at 2:09 and an 8-4 decision from Jack Bachman at 149.

The Golden bears closed within 15-1 before the Mountain Cats put the match away.

Brian Gibbons decisioned Ricky Pens, 3-0, at 174 before McKillop pinned Giovanni Pena at 184.

“The matches we did lose, we were able to keep them to three or four points,” Pecora said. “Bonus points were huge.”

Pitt-Johnstown travels to No. 6 Findlay (Ohio) on Dec. 1 before its 2012-13 home debut against East Stroudsburg on Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. in the Sports Center.

Six St. Francis players

earn all-conference honors

A pair of football players, Jakob DeMedal and Josh Thiel, from St. Francis University were selected to the All-Northeast Conference first team on Wednesday, while Red Flash freshman Anthony Abeid earned NEC Rookie of the Year honors.

William Houston, Thurston Kino, Terrace Bourne and Grant Price earned second-team honors.

DeMedal, a junior strong safety, led SFU, which finished 5-6 for its best record since 1992, with 88 tackles and three forced fumbles. Thiel had the best season for a kicker in Red Flash history as he made 11 of 12 field goals, including a school-record 50-yarder against Central Connecticut State.

Houston and Kino were key members of an offensive line that had the best run offense in the NEC and allowed 12 sacks in 11 games. St. Francis rushed for a school record 2,600 yards.

A defensive lineman, Bourne finished his season with 32 tackles, including seven for loss. He also had three fumble recoveries.

Price dropped 16 punts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line and forced 10 fair catches.

Abeid started the season well behind established backs like Kyle Harbridge, Keion Wade and Khairi Dickson on the depth chart. Injuries to Harbridge and Dickson elevated Abeid, who rushed for 258 yards and had 122 receiving yards in addition to 219 kickoff return yards.
