Tomahawks can't find net in loss to Wild

WENATCHEE, Wash — For the second straight night, a shorthanded goal played a pivotal role in a Johnstown Tomahawks’ North American Hockey League game with the Wenatchee Wild.

This time, the Tomahawks were on the wrong end of it.

Jono Davis scored a shorthanded goal with 7:18 remaining in the third period on Saturday night to lift the Wild (17-3-2) to a 1-0 victory over the Tomahawks (12-7-6). Johnstown saw its five-game winning streak snapped a night after Andrew McDonald’s shorthanded goal helped the Tomahawks hand the Wild a rare home loss.

Johnstown remains in fourth place in the eight-team NAHL North Division, a point behind Kalamazoo. Wenatchee moved into a tie for first in the four-team West Division.

Goalie Chris Truehl kept the Tomahawks in the game, as he made 38 saves, including a handful of tremendous ones. It was tough to fault him for the one goal he did allow, as Cody Gylling turned the puck over in the neutral zone, giving Davis a breakaway that he quickly took advantage of by ripping a shot past Truehl.

The Tomahawks struggled to generate much offense against Wenatchee’s Robert Nichols, who needed to make just18 saves in the shutout. The Johnstown power play, which entered the weekend as the fourth-best in the league with a 22.66 conversion rate, was ineffective. The Tomahawks were 0 for 6 with the man advantage.

Wenatchee was 0 for 1 on the power play.

The teams will meet again in February in Johnstown. The Tomahawks will stay on the West Coast for the next week, as they head to Fresno (Calif.) to take on the Monsters next weekend.
