HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Forest Hills 4

Bishop Carroll 3


SIDMAN – Forest Hills lost the lead Friday in the top of the seventh but won the game when Chris Gallaher got hit with a pitch in the bottom of the inning.

Down to their final out, the Huskies

(13-4) tied the game on Josh Bardzo’s two-run single, but the Rangers (8-7) answered quickly.

Chris Lazration had three RBIs for Forest Hills while Colin Gdula walked four times and scored twice.

Dylan Link and Ryan Woo each had a pair of hits for Bishop Carroll.

Ferndale 15, Shanksville2

SHANKSVILLE – Ian Helsel went

3-for-5 with two doubes, drove in three runs and scored four more for the Yellow Jackets.

Mike Dorchak had two hits, including a double, drove in two runs and scored four.

Billy Devlin singled, doubled and drove in a run. Drew Palmer, Bobby Hess and Ian Havener each drove in a pair of runs.

Sam Shober had two hits for Shanksville with an RBI.

Johnstown 11, Bedford 10

BEDFORD – Curtis McClain and J.P. Bush each had two hits and drove in three runs as Johnstown edged Bedford on Thursday.

Jerrell Thornton had three doubles and two RBIs while Joey Koshal doubled for the Trojans. Josh Bardo added two hits.

Rylan Schnably had four hits, including a home run, for the Bisons. Ryan Robinnette had three hits. James Yocklovich and Matt Deffibaugh each had two, including a double for Deffibaugh.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Northern Cambria 15

Laurel Valley 0


NORTHERN CAMBIA – Laurel Valley got the first two outs in the second inning without a problem, but then the wheels fell off for the Rams, as host Northern Cambria scored 15 unearned runs before making an out.

The Colts had 14 hits and took advantage of seven errors in the inning. Sami Kollar led the way for Northern Cambria with three hits. Jenna Bobik, Mary Brown and Lauren Ashurst each had two hits. Ashley Baker, who did not allow a hit in three innings, doubled, as did Giana Butterworth.

Richland 11, North Star 2

BOSWELL – Nicki Mihalik struck out

14 and walked one while throwing a three-hitter for Richland.

Sarah Szelong was 3-for-4 with a run scored for the Rams (14-1). Maura Koshute, Lauren Keffer, Clarissa Snopko, Alexis Dona, Alexa Hoover each had two hits.

Chelsea Danel and Breann Putman each had a hit and scored a run for the Cougars.

Johnstown 7

Bishop McCort 0


Kassie Sabo struck out five and walked one in a four-hit shutout as host Johns-

town won on senior day.

Senior twins Brittany and Jenna Zucco each scored a run, as did classmates Lindsay Rogers, Mikey Tyrrell and Kim Gojmerac.

Junior Amber Manges scored two runs, including a steal of home.

Emily Basile had two hits for Bishop McCort.

Somerset 6, Berlin 1

BERLIN – Jessie Stinebiser went 3-for-4 with a home run as Someset stopped Berlin.

Tiffany Gardner had two hits and drove in a run, as did Jaime Emert. Nichole Landis tripled and scored two runs.

Kristen Hankinson had a hit and drove in a run for Berlin while Lauren Short singled and scored.

PRO BASEBALL

Angels call up Ryan


It took nearly five years, but Michael Ryan finally made it back to the major leagues.

The former AAABA star, who is from Indiana County, was recalled by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Friday before their late game at Seattle.

Ryan was hitting .351 with Salt Lake of the Pacific Coast League with eight doubles, two triples and a home run. He had 12 RBIs in 21 games with the AAA team.

A fifth-round draft pick in 1996, Ryan played during four major league seasons with the Minnesota Twins (2002-05) and has a career .265 average with seven homers. He also appeared in the postseason with the Twins.

Ryan, who will turn 33 in July, has spent time in the Atlanta Braves, Pittsburgh Pirates and Florida Marlins organizations.

He even spent time in the independent Atlantic League in an effort to get back to the big leagues.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

W.Va. State advances


Ryne Holstine scattered six hits in a complete game effort as West Virginia State eliminated West Virginia Wesleyan 3-1 in a WVIAC tournament game.

The Jackets scored all three of their runs in the seventh frame, on successive hits by Josh Bower, Jeremy Fisher and Bo Darby.

Wesleyan got its lone run in the fifth when Corey Flickinger doubled to score Will Blankenship.

Bower went 4-for-5, and Fisher added two hits as West Virginia State outhit Wesleyan 9-6. Matt Coker and Gene Franks had two-hit days for the Bobcats.

Starter Kevin Holdsworth was saddled with the loss, allowing eight hits and three runs.

Reliever Nathan Gainer did not surrender a run and only gave up one hit in

21/3 innings.

Seton Hill 4, Concord 1

Seton Hill received a sterling pitching effort from Rick Raraigh to remain unbeaten in the WVIAC tournament.

Raraigh struck out 10 and scattered five hits in eight innings of work against Division II’s second-highest scoring offense.

Christian Muth worked a scoreless ninth to earn the save for the Griffins.

Dave McCarthy and Pat Trettel each launched homered for the Griffins.

Seton Hill and West Virginia State collide at noon today in the winner’s bracket final.

Concord meets Pitt-Johnstown in an elimination game at 3:30 p.m.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Shannon To Rejoin Red Flash


LORETTO – St. Francis men’s basketball coach Don Friday has announced that sophomore-to-be Umar Shannon has returned to the team and will play for the Red Flash during the 2010-11 season.

Shannon left the team on Feb. 4 for personal reasons, but remained at St. Francis and completed his studies during the spring semester. Shannon, who is a business major, had a change of heart and approached Friday about a return to the team in March.

Early in the season, Shannon emerged as one of the top young talents in the Northeast Conference.

He played in 20 of the first 21 games for the Red Flash, and earned a starting spot at point guard.

At the time he left the team, Shannon was third on the team in scoring and

was tied for the team-lead with 28 3-pointers.

He finished the season with 13 starts in 20 games, and averaged 9.0 ppg, 1.4 rpg and 1.6 apg.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Mount moves on


CRESSON – Mount Aloysius advanced to the semifinals of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tournament on Friday with a 4-3 victory over Penn State-Altoona.

Penn State-Altoona’s Erin Cline doubled in the game’s first run, and the Lions made it 3-0 with RBI singles in the fourth by Cline and Heidi Shoemaker.

In the bottom half of the fourth, Mount Aloysius catcher Whitney Shearer drove home Whitney Giedroc, who tripled to start the inning.

Megan Schmidt also tripled in the fourth inning, and scored on Meagan Thomas’ single, to get Mount Aloysius within a run.

Geidroc had a two-run double in the fifth to give the Lady Mounties the lead.

Mount Aloysius pitcher Megan Brown gave up seven hits and had three strikeouts in the win.

The top-seeded Lady Mounties advance to play second-seeded Frostburg State.

The AMCC conference tournament will continue through Sunday at Ward Field in Cresson.
