JOHNSTOWN —
Delweld pounded out 10 hits during the third and fourth innings to break open what began as a pitchers’ duel with rival Martella’s Pharmacy.
The outburst paved the way for surging Delweld’s 9-1 victory over Martella’s in Wednesday’s early game at Point Stadium.
“(Martella’s right-hander Mike) Mulvey’s a good pitcher and he’s always around the plate so we just wanted to bear down,” Delweld manager Chris DelSignore said as his team improved to 15-8. “After we got the second time through we started to get at him. We just wanted to try to get a pitch we could drive. We hit the ball hard in those two innings.”
Delweld has won six straight games and 11 of its past 12 to erase the sting of a 4-7 start to the season.
Ian Helsel, Josh Staniscia, Marcus Shippey and Luke Campbell had two hits apiece, and Eric Weyant and Helsel each drove in a pair. Weyant scored twice.
“They had better approaches at the plate than we did,” Martella’s manager Chris Pfeil said. “We made a mistake, they capitalized and blew it into a big inning.”
Martella’s Mulvey retired the first five batters he faced, and six of seven.
Delweld righty Ben Legath had a no-hitter through two innings, worked out of a bases-loaded jam by allowing only one run in the third, and stranded two more runners in the fourth.
“Ben battled,” DelSignore said. “Ben still is recovering from Tommy John surgery. He’s starting to stretch it out a little bit.”
Delweld sent nine hitters to the plate in the third and collected five hits and five runs. Devin Pritts tripled, and Shippey had a run-producing double during the rally.
Martella’s catcher Pat Gully doubled and scored on a bases-loaded walk to Luke Williams in the bottom of the third, but Legath contained the rally. Gully had two hits.
“They threatened with the bases loaded and he was able to pitch out of the jam,” DelSignore said. “He gave up one, which was huge for him and huge for us.”
Delweld had five more hits in the three-run fourth. DelSignore’s team added one more in the fifth on three walks and a fielder’s choice.
Martella’s had only four hits against four Delweld hurlers, and two of those came in the bottom of the seventh. Pfeil’s team stranded nine baserunners, four in scoring position.
“Right now we just don’t have good approaches at the plate,” Pfeil said. “We don’t hit based on what the count is. We get ourselves in holes and we’re guessing on third strikes.
“We’re getting to two-thirds of the way through the season,” the veteran manager added. “We better either get focused and start doing the things we know how to do or we’re going to be done playing baseball early this year.”
