Reliever carries N.Y. to win over Chicago

ST. MICHAEL — Pitcher John Schmidt provided just the pick-up that New York needed against Chicago Metro’s Des Plaines Patriots on Monday at St. Michael.

The right-hander, a pick-up player for the Long Island Astros, provided seven innings of relief pitching as New York defeated Chicago 7-2.

“This was my first game playing with this team, but I’ve played against them for many years, and when they told me they needed a little help on the pitching side to come down to this tournament, they called me,” said Schmidt, who allowed one run on five hits while striking out five and walking one.

“They were always a team that gave me a hard time, so it’s good to be playing with them as opposed to playing against them for once.

“I had a good fastball going, but my changeup was really the pitch that was working for me. Every once in a while I would mix in a slider, and that kept them off guard.”

New York scored a pair of runs in the first inning. Pete Magistrale was hit by a pitch and then stole second. After a walk to Warren Kelly by Chicago starter Jake Rone, Mike Cunningham blasted a double, bringing home Magistrale.

Kevin Primm’s single to left plated Kelly to give the Astros the early lead.

In the bottom of the first, Long Island starter Matt Metz gave up singles to Ryan Kiesel and Kevin Serna, then loaded the bases with a walk to Jimmy Risi.

After Metz struck out Jason Cohen, Brian Norwood’s sacrifice plated Kiesel to cut the New York lead in half. Another Metz strikeout got the Astros out of the inning.

New York added three runs in the second and two more in the fourth to build a 7-1 lead.

“Getting off to the quick start with two runs in the first inning was key for us,” New York manager Jeffrey Rusoff said. “My starting pitcher actually hurt his shoulder in the first inning and John Schmidt came in for an unscheduled start, and he got the job done. He was one of two pitchers we picked up from one of the other rosters who were eligible players for the tournament. It was a big pick-up, and he threw a great game.

“We just were able to build on that early lead, and my pitcher went out there and was able to get the job done. He kept them off balance with the off-speed pitches and had very good control around the strike zone. The defense played superbly, and we hit when we had to hit.”

The Patriots added a run in the seventh. With one out, Keith Brand singled, moved to second on an errant throw and went to third on a ground out. Brian Evans singled home Brand.

“I thought their hitters did an excellent job of making our guys throw a lot of pitches,” Chicago Metro manager Mike Schultz said. “Our pitcher had over 100 pitches after the first four innings. New York really fought and had very good at-bats. I don’t remember any of their guys the first four innings who had poor at-bats. They fouled off a lot of pitches. They got our guy tired. The good thing was that our second pitcher (Alex Norman) came in and threw extremely well.

“Their pitchers did a great job of mixing speeds and throwing strikes. We had a few strikeouts with guys in scoring position, and you want to put the ball in play there and make something happen.”

Norman did not allow a hit and struck out four.

Ryan Rusoff was 2-for-3, driving in two runs and scoring one while Cunningham went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Kelly scored two runs for New York.

Kiesel , Serna and Evans each had two hits for Chicago.

New York will take on Baltimore today while Chicago Metro faces Maryland State.

  • james throws Pirates pick up fourth straight victory

There were times earlier in his career when James McDonald would run into trouble and innings would slow to a crawl. Even worse, runners would disappear, and not in a good way.
Too much thinking. Not enough attacking.

What do you think of the Johnstown Tomahawks name for the city's North American Hockey League team?

I like it
I don’t like it
It’s OK since the Jets and Chiefs were not available
I don’t care, hockey in Johnstown does not matter to me.
