Johnstown duo reaches quarters
HERSHEY – The Greater Johnstown High School doubles team of Nelson Gosnell and Ben Mayer defeated District 12 champions Sergio Muniz and Joel Fagliano of Masterman 6-2, 6-1 on Friday in the first round of the Class AA state championship tournament.
“They did a good job,” Trojans coach Joe Ramirez said. “They represented us well.”
Gosnell and Mayer were eliminated 6-0, 6-0 in the afternoon quarterfinal round by Zach Simon and Alex Grimm of Wyomissing.
The tournament continues today with semifinals in the morning and finals in the afternoon.

Group selects area student
The PIAA has announced that Deanna Sanders, a sophomore at Greater Johnstown High School has been selected as one of 12 student-athletes from Pennsylvania to attend the 2010 NFHS National Student Leadership Conference in Indianapolis July 15-18.
The conference provides a forum for student and adult leaders to discuss contemporary issues facing education-based athletics and activities. Through interactive, large- and small-group discussions, these leaders will learn to promote respect, positive values, sportsmanship, teamwork, healthy lifestyles and community service.
Sanders, who is ranked in the top 10 in her class with a 3.86 GPA and plays on the varsity volleyball team, is the daughter of Devon and Kerri Sanders.
BASKETBALL
Skerry named Pitt assistant
PITTSBURGH – Pat Skerry, an assistant coach at Providence the past two seasons, will replace his former boss on the Pitt men’s basketball coaching staff.
Skerry was hired to replace former assistant coach Tom Herrion, who was the head coach at the College of Charleston when Skerry was on the staff there from 2003-05. Skerry, 42, spent the following three seasons as an assistant coach at Rhode Island before being hired by Providence.
Skerry also was the head coach at Curry College.
Herrion recently left Pitt to become the head coach at Marshall.
BASEBALL
Gdulas power St. Michael
ST. MICHAEL – Justin Gdula hit a pair of two-run homers and Colin Gdula went 3-for-4 with a solo homer in the fourth to lead St. Michael to a 14-6 victory over Stoystown on Friday in a Cambria County American Legion game.
Matt Washko was 3-for-5 with two RBIs for the hosts.
Seven Stoystown batters had a hit each, including Brock Medva, who reached base four times on a hit and three walks.

Michigan board gives go-ahead on Winter Classic
The University of Michigan Board of Regents on Wednesday authorized athletic director Dave Brandon to seek a contract with the NHL that would allow the league to hold next year’s Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium.
