1. GOV. TOM CORBETT TO MARK NEW YEAR WITH LATEST CHAPTER IN OLD SAGA: PENN STATE CHILD SEX ABUSE SCANDAL

The governor will hold a news conference in State College today announcing a federal lawsuit against the NCAA over stiff sanctions – including a $60 million fine – imposed against Penn State in the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

2. NEWLY ELECTED LAWMAKERS DID MORE THAN MAKE RESOLUTIONS ON NEW YEAR’S DAY

The new legislators took the oath of office at the state Capitol in Harrisburg. It was the first time in 22 years the ceremony was held on the holiday. The state constitution specifies that it take place on the first Tuesday in January.

3. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES FOCUSING ON BIRDS OF A DIFFERENT FEATHER TO REPLACE FIRED COACH ANDY REID

The Eagles have lined up interviews with three assistant coaches on the NFC’s top-seeded team. Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter and special teams coach Keith Armstrong are said to be targeted.

4. SUSPENDED PITTSBURGH-AREA PRIEST DUE IN FEDERAL COURT FOR SENTENCING ON CHILD PORN POSSESSION

Federal prosecutors want the Rev. Bartley Sorensen to spend eight to 10 years in prison for possessing thousands of computer images, some of them sadomasochistic. The attorney for the priest who used to head a parish in suburban Churchill is hoping for only a mandatory five-year term.

5. GOV. TOM CORBETT, BRITISH FIRM AGREE TO DELAY DEAL ON PRIVATIZING PENNSYLVANIA LOTTERY

The new deadline for the $34 billion bid by Camelot Global Services PA LLC is Jan. 10. The Revenue Department says the extra time will give the lottery workers’ union time to submit a proposal of its own.
