Glenville State beats UPJ in shootout
Pitt-Johnstown led by 12 points during the first half, but No. 20 Glenville State rallied for a 93-87 victory Monday at the Sports Center to snap the Lady Cats’ five-game win streak.
Glenville State (19-2, 14-1), the first-place team in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, opened the game with a 3-pointer from Ashleigh Fossett, but soon after Pitt-Johnstown (12-8, 10-7) seized the lead and did not relinquish it the rest of the half.
UPJ led by 25-13 after Jasmine Harper scored in the paint with 12:32 left in the first half. That’s when the Pioneers began their comeback.
Glenville State worked the game back to a 48-48 tie by halftime.
Pitt-Johntown kept the upset bid possible until the game’s final minutes. When Rachel Johnson drained a pair of free throws, the game was tied at 72-all. Then, Glenville State scored the next eight points and held off UPJ.
Kelsey Sleighter scored 16 pointys to go with six rebounds for the Mountain Cats. Kaitlynn Fratz also scored 16 points. Earlier in the day, Fratz earned WVIAC Player of the Week honors for the second consecutive week.
Leah Hanson and Rachel Johnson each finished with 14 points and five rebounds.
Ginny Mills finished with a game-high 23 points and Aesha Peters had 19 points and nine rebounds for the Pioneers.
St. Francis falls at LIU-Brooklyn
Reigning Northeast Conference Player of the Week Alli Williams finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds for her 14th double-double of the season, but St. Francis lost at LIU-Brroklyn, 61-43, at the Wellness Center.
Latava Whippy led the Blackbirds (5-16, 2-8) with 14 points and 15 rebounds.
The Red Flash (12-9, 7-3) never led, shot 30 percent and scored 21 points in the first half.
Alexa Hayard scored 11 points for St. Francis.
Men
Novak paces UPJ win over Glenville State
Nick Novak scored a game-high 26 points and dished out nine assists as Pitt-Johnstown moved above .500 in the WVIAC with an 85-74 victory over Glenville State at the Sports Center.
The Mountain Cats (13-8, 9-8) took control of the game with a 15-5 run that extended from late in the first half into the second half. It was capped with an Ian vescovi dunk for a 43-30 lead.
Glenville State (10-10, 6-9) closed within 62-56 before UPJ rebuilt a commanding lead.
Bill Luther and Vescovi scored 14 points apiece to help the Pitt-Johnstown cause. Jordan Miller chipped in with 12 points, all on 3-pointers.
Jamel Morris led the Pioneers with 20 points and D.J. Blanks scored 19. Lamar Mallory finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
The Mountain Cats begin a stretch of three straight WVIAC road games at Charleston on Saturday. Pitt-Johnstown will return home to host West Liberty on Feb. 21.
Penn Highlands’ rally falls short
Potomac State led by 20 points at halftime and held off Penn Highlands, 83-80.
The Black Bears had a chance to force overtime, but Paul Williams’ 3-pointer at the buzzer rimmed out.
Jermaine Graves led Penn Highlands with 25 points. Jordan Swauger scored 18 and Josh Corbett finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
