JOHNSTOWN —
Call it a four-peat.
The Delweld baseball team swept the Johnstown AAABA League best-of-5 championship series with three straight wins, and will enter the national AAABA Tournament as the top Johnstown seed after overwhelming Martella’s Pharmacy 11-3 at Point Stadium Friday night.
Manager Chris DelSignore was very happy with his team’s historic effort as Delweld etched its name into Johnstown AAABA history with four consecutive championships and four trips to the national title chase.
“It feels good. This doesn’t get old,” DelSignore said prior to receiving a Gatorade shower. “I guess that it’s one of those things that the more things you get, the more you want.”
Delweld scored a single run in the second and then ran up five in the third to assert control of the game early with a 6-0 lead.
Starting pitcher Bobby Carbaugh threw a complete game, scattering eight hits and shutting out Martella’s for five innings.
Carbaugh said that the Delweld team is confident right now after three straight wins in the championship series.
“You could tell everyone wanted it,” Carbaugh said. “We came out swinging and got ahead. We had a lot of energy and everyone was ready.”
Delweld increased the lead to 10-0 with two runs in the fourth and two in the sixth before Martella’s broke into the scoring column with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Rightfielder Drew Westover powered Delweld Friday night. He blasted a two-run home run over the left field screen to key a sixth-inning rally and knocked a double to right-center to score George Roberts in the second. He finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs and scored twice.
“We had 14 hits tonight, so we've been hitting the ball pretty well of late,” Westover said. “We are on a win streak here, and it's a good feeling to get those wins going into the tournament.”
DelSignore was pleased with his pitching in the championship series. “That's been the story the whole playoffs for us. When you can go through a series like this against a team like that and only give up four runs in three games, that's pretty impressive,” the Delweld manager said. “It’s a tribute to our pitchers and how hard they worked.”
Because of a change this year, Johnstown will field two teams as they did last year in an emergency situation after Washington D.C. dropped out. That means that Martella’s will also enter the field.
“Everybody is going to start that tournament with a 0-0 record,” manager Chris Pfeil said. “I know that we’re very capable of going in there and making a lot of noise. It’s a good baseball team here. I know that we didn't show it the past few nights. We have a lot of talent here and a lot of character here. There’s some bruised egos right now. We’re going to regroup and give it everything we have.”
In addition to Westover's offense, George Roberts (3-for-4, three runs), Tyler Uphouse (2-for-5, two RBIs, one run) and Spencer White (2-for-4, two RBIs and one run) recorded multiple hits in the 14-hit attack.
Mike LeViseur (3-for-4, two RBIs) and Sam Watkins (2-for-4, one RBI, one run) led Martella's.
Notes: Delweld had the first four pick-up selections for the tournament. DelSignore took Principle Development second baseman Matt Donaldson, 19; Roxberry Creamery pitcher Nate Kohuth, 19; Berkley Hills Renegades pitcher Cory Kaltenbaugh, 19; and Renegades hurler A.J. Rievel, 18. ... Martella’s Pfeil chose Principle pitcher Evan James, 19; Roxberry Creamery switch-hitting center fielder Alex Buccilli, 20; Roxberry pitcher-outfielder-infielder Joe Fearer, 18; and Renegades center fielder Mike Kastelic, 19.
