Scholastic basketball in brief — Jan. 19

High School Girls

Ligonier Valley 56, Northern Cambria 25

LIGONIER – Maddy Grimm’s 12 points and 17 rebounds paved the way for the Rams in a Heritage Conference win on Tuesday night.

Callen Knupp had 10 points and eight boards while Courtney Bridge pitched in 11 points for the hosts.

Berlin 42, Ferndale 20

BERLIN – Aleesa Fieg led the Mountaineers with a dozen points and Shelby Coughenour pitched in 11 in a WestPAC win over Ferndale.

Elizabeth Chobany’s 12 points led the Yellow Jackets.

Penn Cambria 48, Johnstown 38

CRESSON – Brianna Kearney’s 17 points led the way for the Panthers as they topped Johnstown.

Penn Cambria used an 18-8 edge in fourth quarter scoring to pull away after the teams had tied at 30 after three quarters. Brianna Mulhearn scored 13 points and Megan Wheeler tallied 11 in the win.

Tynesha Smith led the Trojans with

13 points.

Portage 46, Rockwood 34

ROCKWOOD ­ ­– Emily Chobany had

13 points and six steals as visiting Portage beat Rockwood.

Kaitlyn Dividock had 11 points and Olivia McCabe had nine rebounds, nine steals and four blocked shots for the Mustangs. Kelsey Zerfoss netted 14 points and Samantha Emert had 10 for Rockwood.

Salisbury-Elk Lick 47, Johnstown Christian 36

SALISBURY – The Elks’ trio of Emily Beitzel (17 points), Alayna Harshberger (14) and Lydia Hale-Cooper (12) combined to score all but four of their squad’s points in a win over Johnstown Christian.

The Blue Jays’ Rachael Rose scored

15 points while teammate Kathy Guardaramma tallied 11.

Blacklick Valley 53, Shade 41

CAIRNBROOK – Allison Verba had

18 points and Jamie Kish had 15 as visiting Blacklick Valley beat Shade.

Chelsey Pongrac had 19 points for Shade.

Teammate Becca Muha had 13 points,

13 rebounds and four blocked shots while Ashley Manges had 10 rebounds.

Conemaugh Valley 68, Turkeyfoot Valley 43

CONFLUENCE – Nikki Ledwich’s

14 points led the way for the Blue Jays in a road win at Turkeyfoot Valley.

Carly Gruss added 12 points and five steals in the win while teammate Darla James poured in 20 points.

Kami Koscheck’s 16 points led the Rams.

Bishop Guilfoyle 72, Somerset 28

ALTOONA – Bishop Guilfoyle bounced back after its first loss of the season, which came Monday at Westmont, with a rout of visiting Somerset.

The Marauders, who led 24-0 after the first quarter and 44-7 at the half, got a game-high 25 points from Halee Adams while Kelsey Livoti added 11.

Bits Barron topped the Golden Eagles with 12 points while Emily Satkovich added 10.

High School Boys

Johnstown 75, Richland 42

Phillip Madison supplied 18 points to lead a quartet of Johnstown players who scored in double figures in a rescheduled Laurel Highlands Section 2 contest at Richland.

Dwight Andrews and Isaiah Haselrig each added 12 points while Alkwan Williams chipped in 10. Williams also grabbed 13 rebounds while Haselrig had a dozen and Andrews added 10.

The Rams were led by 17 points from Kyle Flick and 11 from Alex Ritenour.

Cambria County Christian 70, Clearfield Alliance 47

CLEARFIELD – Josiah Perry scored

14 points, Dom Williams had 11 and Bobby Harrington, 10, as Cambria County Christian remained unbeaten (11-0) with a road win over Clearfield Alliance.

Justin Carnes lead all scorers with

19 points for the Crusaders, who also got

11 points from Caleb Fish.

Salisbury-Elk Lick 83, Johnstown Christian 57

SALISBURY – Alex Beiler connected on six of the Elks’ 10 3-pointers and led all scorers with 32 points as Salisbury-Elk Lick downed Johnstown Christian.

Brandon Miller’s 23 points supplemented Beiler’s output while teammate Ryan Vogt added 22 points.

Kevin Shook scored 14 points to lead the Blue Jays. JonLuke Varner scored 13 points while Jake Tuck scored 11.

    There were times earlier in his career when James McDonald would run into trouble and innings would slow to a crawl. Even worse, runners would disappear, and not in a good way.

    A lot of activity took place during the offseason, including the AAABA national committee’s vote to expand the age limit to 21 years old beginning in 2013.

    Paige Lumley was on an emotional roller coaster and seeing silver on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Richland senior had state record jumps  twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,
    1¾ inches.
    Defending state champion, second-seeded  junior Lanae Newsome of Brookville, won with a jump of 40-3½.

    Matt Dull finished his athletic career with his best on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Chestnut Ridge senior ran a career-best time of 38.12 to finish second in the 300 hurdles final, also setting another school record.

    Matt Hague was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their 11th straight loss with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.
    Hague took a 96 mph fastball from Dolis (2-4) in the back near the shoulder blade, scoring Jose Tabata and eliciting an incredulous look to the sky by the Cubs reliever.
