As heavy rains and high winds pelted the region on Monday, area athletic directors and coaches along with members of district 5 and 6 athletic committees were busying making contingency plans for the soccer and volleyball playoffs.
In District 6, soccer games scheduled for today have been rescheduled for Thursday. The Class AA and A championship matches have been pushed back for Saturday, the deadline to enter teams in the PIAA tournament.
District 5 girls soccer games scheduled for Monday were moved to Wednesday starting at 4 p.m. at Somerset High School. The championship matches will be played Thursday, also at Somerset.
“We had a contingency plan set up before the storm hit,” said Paul Leonard, the chairman of the District 5 girls soccer committee. “The turf at Somerset helps us and with the district deadline being on Saturday to turn into for states, it gives us a couple days wiggle room. Obviously, Friday is out because of football.”
Leonard made the decision to postpone by 11 p.m. on Sunday and part of it was based on the eastern region of District 5. McConnellsburg, which is a girls soccer semifinalist, was hit harder by the storm.
“If it’s bad enough, we could still go Saturday, but one of the reasons we chose Somerset was not only because of the turf, but we wanted to be fair to both teams that win. If they both play Wednesday and Thursday, it’s fair.”
District 5 volleyball matches scheduled for Monday will be played Wednesday, and the Class AA championship matches will be Thursday. The Class A championship will be played Saturday.
Volleyball matches in District 6 were moved from Monday to today, but those plans are weather-permitting.
“Right now, everything is scheduled for (today), but the only problem is it could be worse,” Bishop Carroll athletic director Greg Snyder said. “If we do have cancellations and if we can’t play (today), it seems like we’ll have to go Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Three days in a row, that’s tough on coaches.”
The Bishop Carroll girls volleyball team is scheduled to host Class A first-round matches. Northern Cambria against Ferndale is scheduled for 6 p.m. with Claysburg-Kimmel against the Huskies to follow at 7:30 p.m.
“It’s tough. It’s real tough, but there’s nothing you can do about Mother Nature,” Snyder said. “We originally wanted to keep the volleyball games (on Monday) without canceling, but when safety comes into issue, you can’t risk anything. The weird thing is at exactly this time last year, we had a foot of snow.”
Varsity football games won’t be played until Friday evening, but teams preparations are being affected.
Snyder, who also serves as Bishop Carroll’s football coach, normally spends Mondays watching film with coaches and players and supervising a weight room session. Early dismissal at Bishop Carroll delayed those plans.
Bishop Carroll plays at Westmont Hilltop on Saturday.
“Playing Westmont, everything is a day late, but this does back us up a little,” Snyder said. “You’d like that extra day for practice, but we won’t be able to do that this week.”

Locke grinds through as Pirates blank Astros
Jeff Locke didn’t have his best stuff Sunday. He didn’t need it to shut down the majors’ worst team.
Locke allowed three hits over seven innings, Pedro Alvarez homered and the Pittsburgh Pirates won for the eighth time in 10 games, 1-0 over the Houston.
Locke (4-1) won his fourth straight decision and gave up one run or fewer for the fifth time in his past eight outings. He struck out four and walked three. -
