Pirates claim Thompson
The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed left-handed pitcher Aaron Thompson off waivers from the Washington Nationals on Thursday.
The Pirates also designated left-handed pitcher Wil Ledezma for assignment to make room for Thompson on the 40-man roster.
The club also announced the signing of infielder Garrett Atkins to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training as a non-roster player.
The 23-year-old Thompson was the Florida Marlins first-round pick (22nd overall) in the 2005 draft.
Thompson was acquired by Washington in a deal for first baseman Nick Johnson on July 31, 2009.
Thompson went 4-13 with a 5.80 ERA in 26 starts for Double-A Harrisburg last season.
Atkins, 31, was signed as a free agent last December by Baltimore and hit .214 with a homer and nine RBIs in 44 games last season before being released by the Orioles on July 6.
An eight-year major league veteran, Atkins played with Colorado from 2003-2009. He has made 632 appearances at third base, 105 at first base and six in the outfield.
