St. Francis loses at CCSU
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Four players posted double-figures for the St. Francis women’s basketball team, but it was not enough, as they fell to Central Connecticut State, 76-71, in the final regular season contest on Monday.
Alli Williams led the Red Flash (15-14, 10-8) with 17 points and 10 rebounds for her 21st double-double of the season. Jaclyn Babe scored 20 first-half points and finished with 29 for the Blue Devils (16-13, 10-8), who will come to Loretto on Sunday for a Northeast Conference Quarterfinal match-up.
CCSU led by as many as nine with 10:12 to go in the first half. The Flash went on a 6-0 run to narrow the margin to after a reverse layup from Shene Fleming. After a 3-pointer from Alexa Hayward, the score was tied up at 23. The Blue Devils went on a late 8-0 run and went into the break with a six-point lead.
The Red Flash scored seven unanswered points to take a 35-34 lead early in the second half. CCSU went on another 8-0 run to regain the lead. Nickia Gibbs made back-to-back jumpers to narrow the margin to six, forcing a Blue Devils timeout at the 10:51 mark.
CCSU continued to hold a lead despite the Flash threatening several times. Hayward knocked down a triple with just four seconds to play to get SFU within two, but the time ran out before the Red Flash could get any closer.
Gibbs finished with 16 points. Rebecca Sparks added 11. Hayward posted 10 points to round out the players in double-figures.
St. Francis will host Central Connecticut on Sunday at DeGol Arena. The time is TBD.
UPJ postpones games
Due to potential bad weather on Wednesday, Pitt-Johnstown’s WVIAC doubleheader against Bluefield State College at Point Stadium has been postponed.
A make-up date has not yet been determined.
Mt. Aloysius loses to Penn State-Berks
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Mount Aloysius baseball team lost a 13-8 decision to Penn State-Berks on Monday.
Luke Szymanski went 2-for-5 with 3 RBI for the Mounties (2-3). Aaron Kovach doubled twice and added two RBI. Jesse Bortner hit a solo home run and also had two RBI.
On Sunday, the Mounties won a pair of games. They defeated Catholic, 14-5, and Emerson, 13-5.
Kovach drove in four runs against Catholic and added two more versus Emerson.
Derrick Capiak and Chris Nolan were the winning pitchers.
Mount opens season with split
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Mount Aloysius opened its season with a split of a doubleheader.
In the opener, Jalissa Westover was 2 for 2 but the Mounties fell to Division II Urbana, 14-0. In the second game, Dani Hart was 2 for 4 with a triple and Westover was 2 of 4 as Mount Aloysius downed Mount St. Mary’s 7-3.
Shelby Kline got the win on the mound and Taylor Mansfield earned the save.
