Bedford was making its fifth straight appearance in the PIAA Class AA Dual-Meet Championships on Thursday.
District 2 champion Western Wayne was making its first.
The difference was evident quickly, as the Bisons beat the Wildcats 42-27 to advance to today’s quarterfinal round, where District 5 champion Bedford will face Pen Argyl at noon.
“I think our kids’ experience really showed through,” Bedford coach Brian Creps said.
“They were expecting to come down here and get some wins.”
Michael Brett made sure Bedford (16-0) got off to a good start. Brett gave up a first-period takedown to Conner Rosensweet
– who came in with a 26-2 record – but scored a second-period reversal, then pinned Rosensweet with a cradle.
“That was really a toss-up match,” Creps said. “That’s a really tough kid. Michael’s really been wrestling well all year.”
Western Wayne (15-7) briefly took the lead, as Matt Rosensweet beat Jacob Krupa 4-2 at 220 pounds and Joseph Ingaglio pinned Justin Easter at 285 to make it 9-6.
But Bedford got rolling when the lineup flipped over, as Jake Warren (106 pounds), Ryan Easter (113), Garrett Thomas (120) and Toby Brett (126) each recorded pins.
“The big thing was our lower weights were just dominant today,” Creps said. “That got the match going in our direction.”
Warren pinned Ronald Mrsich in 3:55.
That seemed like an eternity compared with the quick falls that succeeded it.
Easter need just 39 seconds to cradle and pin Joshua Brown at 113 pounds.
Cory Franc lasted slightly longer, as Garrett Thomas pinned him in 53 seconds.
Toby Brett’s fall in 1:35 at 126 pounds put Bedford ahead 30-9.
Western Wayne got a victory at 132, as Morgan Fuller beat Caleb Grimes 7-2, but Bedford responded with Zach Dudek’s 12-6 victory over Manuel Mirailh at 138.
“Dudek was behind and had a big flurry and came back and won,” Creps said. “That was big for him.”
Western Wayne’s Beau Fuller beat Jesse Martin 7-1 at 145, but Tanner Williams clinched the dual-meet victory for Bedford with a 13-3 major decision of Lucas Karnick at 152.
Josiah Koontz extended the lead with his technical fall over Brandon Hadden at
160 pounds, but it did come with a price. Koontz suffered a nose injury.
“There’s a chance he might have a broken nose,” Creps said. “I was thinking we might run out of blood time (which is five minutes).”
Creps said it really doesn’t matter if the nose is broken or not, because Koontz can wrestle through the injury.
“If it’s broken, it’s broken. If it’s not, it’s not,” Creps said. “We’ll put a mask on him if we need to.”
Western Wayne won the final two bouts, as Garrett Enslin pinned Cody Yingling and Austin Swoyer picked up a fall over Dylan Evans with one second left in the first period.
Bedford will face a familiar foe in District 11 runner-up Pen Argyl.
“It will be a little tougher tomorrow,” Creps said. “It seems like a yearly matchup (in Hershey). We’re pretty familiar with them and they’re pretty familiar with us. We see them at the King of the Mountain tournament.
“They wrestle a good, physical style. We wrestle a good, physical style. That usually makes for good matchups.”

Hit batsman lifts Pirates over Cubs
Matt Hague was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their 11th straight loss with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.
Hague took a 96 mph fastball from Dolis (2-4) in the back near the shoulder blade, scoring Jose Tabata and eliciting an incredulous look to the sky by the Cubs reliever. -
