BERLIN – Derek Coughenour threw a mercy-rule shortened perfect game as Berlin Brothersvalley routed Turkeyfoot Valley on Tuesday.
The junior struck out six of the nine batters he faced, getting a fly ball, a ground out and pop up for the other outs.
Wyatt Horning went 2 for 3 with two runs and four RBIs while Tyrell Stockwell was 1 for 2 with a walk, two runs scored, four RBIs and four stolen bases.
Somerset 3, Central Cambria 2
SOMERSET – Somerset scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge visiting Central Cambria.
Michael Flyte tripled and Sam Kociola had two hits and drove in a run for the Golden Eagles.
Drew Hemminger and Zach Helsley each drove in a run.
Heath Wirfel doubled and scored a run for Central Cambria. Mitchell Brown had a hit, one run and one run batted in.
Zach Ambrisco had a hit and drove in a run.
Ferndale 10, Blacklick Valley 5
Matt Dorchak had two hits and drove in three runs, and Bobby Hess had two hits and a pair of RBIs as host Ferndale defeated Blacklick Valley.
Blacklick’s Justin Hoffman went 2 for 4.
Richland 13, Cambria Heights 6
Zach Solarczyk had three hits and four RBIs as host Richland downed Cambria Heights.
Cam Kaminsky singled and scored three runs, while Derek Crawford, Kris Brown, and Brandon Fesko each had two hits. Crawford and Brown each doubled for Richland.
Dom Milanesi had two hits and Shane Mallin doubled in two runs for Cambria Heights.
Bishop Guilfoyle 13, Johnstown 0
Jextin Pugh went 4 for 4 with a walk and threw a four-hit shutout as Bishop Guilfoyle beat host Johnstown.
John King had two hits for the Trojans.
Forest Hills 8, Westmont 6
Jared Shope had two hits and scored two runs, and Jared Baker went 2 for 4 with two runs scored as Forest Hills beat host Westmont Hilltop.
Justin Smith singled home the winning run in the seventh.
Westmont’s Bobby Varner went 2 for 4 with three runs scored. He hit a solo homer in the sixth. Ben Legath had two hits and scored twice.
Portage 4, Conemaugh Township 1
DAVIDSVILLE – Portage’s Andrew Maul struck out 15 and walked two in a five-hitter.
Maul helped his own cause, going 2 for 3 and driving in a run while teammate Evan Price was 2 for 3 with a double and scored twice.
Dan Zambanini was 2 for 3 with a solo home run in the second for the Indians, who also got a 2-for-3 outing from Adam Naugle.
SOFTBALL
Blacklick Valley 16 Ferndale 0 (3)
NANTY GLO – Blacklick Valley’s Alison Verba threw a two-hitter and provided two home runs and a triple to help the Vikings blank visiting Ferndale in three innings.
Hailee Scott and Megan Thomas were each 4 for 4, with Thomas swatting a triple.
Blacklick also got a triple from Allison Thomas and a double from Tiana Pawkowski.
Central Cambria 11, Somerset 1
EBENSBURG – Breanne James was 3 for 3 with a triple and scored three runs as Central Cambria downed visiting Somerset in five innings.
Lindsay Beyer went 3 for 3 with a home run and a double and drove in four runs for the Red Devils, who also got a 3-for-3 outing with two home runs and five RBIs from Ali Vogatsky.
Somerset’s Jamie Emert and Jessie Steine-Biser were each 2 for 3.
Chestnut Ridge 19, Southern Fulton 4 (3)
WARFORDSBURG – Winning pitcher Alana Weyant helped her own cause, driving in seven runs on a three-run homer and a grand slam as Chestnut Ridge pounded host Southern Fulton in three innings.
Kayla Gates was 2 for 3 with a double and five RBIs and Stefanie McCoy added a double and two RBIs for the Lions, who also got an RBI in and a double from Bridjie Yothers and a 2-for-3 outing with a double from Tiffany Clingerman.
Westmont 5, Forest Hills 2
SIDMAN – Westmont Hilltop’s Tori Parlock struck out 12 as the Hilltoppers defeated host Forest Hills in the opener for both teams.
Parlock had two hits and Nicole Dorn added a double and two singles for the visitors.
Stephanie Kelley doubled and scored for the Rangers.
Penn Cambria 7, Bedford 4
BEDFORD – Kate Reese tripled and was the winning pitcher with 11 strikeouts, and teammate Kelly Yusko had three hits as Penn Cambria beat host Bedford.
Brianna Toth added a double and Alison Klemen had two hits for the Panthers.
Bedford’s Casey Blevins had two hits, including a triple, and four RBIs. The Bisons were hurt by six errors.
Bishop Carroll 18, Bishop McCort 3 (3)
EBENSBURG – Kayla Legros and Caroline Repko each drove in two runs as host Bishop Carroll crushed Bishop McCort.
Gabby Gueguen tossed a one-hitter in the three-inning game.
Bishop McCort pitchers combined to walk 12 batters.
Rockwood 5, Meyersdale 4
ROCKWOOD – Leah Clay had two hits and drove in a run as the Rockets beat visiting Meyersdale.
Santana Bowman had a hit and drove in one run. Jordan Pritts pitched 51⁄3 innings for the win. Clay and Samantha Emert closed out the game.
Alex Yutzy had two hits and scored a run for Meyersdale while Brittania Oakes had two hits and drove in a run.
North Star 7, Conemaugh Valley 4
Rachel Druist and Mackayla Maust each went 2 for 4 with doubles and Druist scored twice as North Star defeated host Conemaugh Valley.
Brandi Rhoades was 2 for 3 and scored twice for the Cougars, who also got three RBIs from Kaylee Schuck.
Darla Pollino went 2 for 4 with a double a scored a run for the Blue Jays, who also got a 2-for-4 outing with two RBIs from Jamie Cekada along with a 2-for-3 day from Bobbie-Sue Kist.
Johnstown 11, Bishop Guilfoyle 1 (5)
ALTOONA – Greater Johnstown pounded out 12 hits in a season-opening win at Bishop Guilfoyle.
Alex Teeter was 3 for 3 with a double, a run scored and four RBIs for the Trojans. Tara Bicko and Amber Maurer each went 2 for 3 with two doubles and three runs. Bicko drove in a run and Maurer drove in two.
Missy Gosnell added a double and Maggie McClintock drove in a run for Johnstown.
Shade 5, Shanksville 3
SHANKSVILLE – Shade’s Kelli Shaw struck out 10 and walked one in a six-hitter against Shanksville-Stonycreek.
Shaw and Aubrey Polochak each had doubles for the Panthers, which also got two hits from Courtney Ohler.
Abby Duppstadt had a double and Lauren Brewer added two hits for the Vikings.
Portage 9, Conemaugh Township 5
DAVIDSVILLE – Portage’s Tiffany Sossong went 2 for 3 in a road win against Conemaugh Township.
Kayla Luprek had a triple for the Indians.
Richland 13, Cambria Heights 0 (6)
PATTON – Richland winning pitcher Nicki Mihalik struck out 11 in a four-hitter as the Rams downed host Cambria Heights in six innings.
Mihalik went 2 for 4 with three runs scored while teammate Jordan Syfert was 3 for 3 with two runs scored. Ella Tessari added a home run and a double and scored three times for Richland.
Amanda Bobby was 2 for 3 for the Highlanders, who also got a double from Danielle Bodek.
Berlin 12, Turkeyfoot Valley 2 (6)
BERLIN – Berlin’s Megan DeMartino struck out 10 in a six-hitter against visiting Turkeyfoot Valley.
Sammi Johnson had three hits with a home run and drove in four runs for the Mountaineers, who also got two hits each from Keirsten Coughenour and Sarah Wagner. Wagner and Lauren Short each had a double for Berlin.
Renee Nicholson had two hits with a double for the Rams, who also got a double from Maddy Bender.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
UPJ sweeps Ohio Valley
VIENNA, W.Va. – Josh Campanella had seven hits – including two home runs – and four RBIs and Nick Barbera homered and drove in six runs as Pitt-Johnstown swept a doubleheader at Ohio Valley.
UPJ (9-11, 5-3 in WVIAC Northern) belted four home runs in a nine-run sixth inning to earn a 13-5 win in the opener, then scored 11 times in the third inning of a 20-8 victory in Game 2.
Zach Martin and Matt Whiteman each doubled, homered and drove in two runs in the opener, while Bedford’s Seth Roy had two hits and three RBIs. In addition, Drew Westover collected two doubles and Andy Rubal had a pair of RBIs.
The Mountain Cats had 19 more hits in the nightcap. Rubal had three hits, including two doubles, while Martin drove in three.
Ohio Valley fell to 7-10 overall and 3-4 in the WVIAC Southern Division.
