JOHNSTOWN —
Two local graduates are headed to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional baseball tournament as part of the Seton Hill squad that captured the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title on Sunday at Point Stadium.
Richland graduate Bob Carbaugh and North Star’s Cory Kaltenbaugh are freshman pitchers on the Griffins’ squad.
Although neither got to play in the conference tournament, they’re part of a program that won its first WVIAC title and appears to be on the rise.
“It was really cool, because we worked hard all year for it,” Kaltenbaugh said. “We started off the year and that was our goal, to win it. So we’ve reached our goal.”
Kaltenbaugh is looking forward to the NCAA tournament, although the Griffins weren’t scheduled to find out details on their next game until late Sunday night.
“It’s going to be a tough tournament, very tough,” he said, “but I think, as a team, we have grown closer together. I think we’ll play well and come out of there, too.”
Carbaugh was confident as well.
“We’ve put in the time, the effort. We’ve shown everybody that we’re a team to beat and can play with the best of them,” he said.
Seton Hill was perfect in the WVIAC tournament, going 4-0 and clinching the championship with a 14-3 drubbing of West Virginia State on Sunday.
The Griffins (35-19) took the drama out of the game quickly, scoring nine runs in the bottom of the first. Dave McCarthy tripled twice in the inning, the second of which cleared the bases to make it 9-0. Mark Henry also notched a bases-clearing triple in the big inning.
Seton Hill pitcher Andrew Dinardo took advantage of his team's fast start, allowing five hits and two runs in seven innings. He struck out seven and walked three.
McCarthy and Henry each posted three hits for Seton Hill, which finished with 14. Michael Leviseur and Pat Trettel added two hits apiece.
Trettel also homered and knocked in three. Tom Deangelis added a home run for the Griffins.
Josh Bower and Bo Darby both notched two hits to lead the State attack. Starter Kyle Rucker gave up nine runs in a third of an inning.
C.J. Meadows provided the Yellow Jackets (31-14) with 52/3 strong innings out of the bullpen, allowing six hits and two earned runs, while fanning five.
Kaltenbaugh, who plays for the Renegades in the AAABA League, was excited that Seton Hill was able to play at Point Stadium.
“It was actually pretty nice because it was really close to home,” he said. “Playing there all summer in AAABA, it was a normal atmosphere.”
It was even closer to home for the Richland graduate.
“It was a great feeling, coming home and having an opportunity to play for a prestigious award like that,” Carbaugh said.
