Scholastic basketball in brief — Jan. 29

High School Boys

Conemaugh Twp. 62, Meyersdale 44

DAVIDSVILLE - Dan Zambanini scored a game-high

20 points and dished out five assists as host Conemaugh Township downed Meyersdale in a WestPAC non-section game on Friday night.

Eric Ewing added 13 points for the Indians, who also got 12 points from Dillon Boyer and 10 rebounds from Grant Speigle.

The Red Raiders’ Ian Edwards led all rebounders with 15 and also had 15 points. Justin Donaldson chipped in 13 points while Matt Moser had 12 for Meyersdale.

Conemaugh Valley 59, Rockwood 49

A pair of double-doubles boosted the Blue Jays to a win over visiting Rockwood.

Dalton Uncapher led Conemaugh Valley in scoring with 21 points and added 10 rebounds while Brandon Kendera poured in 17 points and grabbed a team-high 13 boards. Hunter Furman scored 16 points in the victory.

Colin Yachere’s 14-point night spurred the Rockets.

North Star 70, Windber 32

BOSWELL – Jake Fleegle scored 18 points, Tony Strasiser added 16 and Wade Walker had 15 to lead North Star.

“Windber was very scrappy and we were a little bit hesitant,” said Cougars coach Jack Loya.

“We didn’t know what was going to happen in the seocnd half. But, we got a little run there, and Fleegle just couldn’t miss.”

Brett Lucas had nine points to lead Windber.

Johnstown Christian 56, Champion Christian 35

HOLLSOPPLE - Jake Tuck scored a game-high 23 points and Kevin Shook added 13 as Johnstown Christian defeated visiting Champion Christian.

Matt Pasquarette topped the Eagles with 12 points.

Richland 71, Somerset 66

SOMERSET – The Rams used a 25-14 charge in the fourth quarter to defeat Somerset in a Laurel Highlands Section 2 battle. Alex Ritenour’s

21 points led Richland, which received 16 points from Kyle Flick and another 15 points from Dereck Malzi.

Eddie Buck’s 15 points topped the Golden Eagles. Jake Close and Brent Barron each scored 14 points while Devin Pritts tallied 11 for Somerset.

Salisbury-Elk Lick 92, Turkeyfoot Valley 55

SALISBURY - Brandon Miller scored a game-high

32 points and Ryan Vogt added 25 as host Salisbury-Elk Lick belted WestPAC South Section rival Turkeyfoot Valley.

Alex Beiler added 18 points, dished out 14 assists and pulled down seven rebounds for the Elks, who also got nine rebounds from J.R. Bluebaugh and eight from Geoff Garlitz.

“Twenty five assists as a team tonight is a number that I am proud about,” Salisbury coach Aaron Beiler said.

High School Girls

Cambria County 35, Centre County 27

MUNDYS CORNER – Alexis Wolfe’s 22 points paved the way for the host Panthers in a win over Centre County Christian.

Natalie Sokira blocked six shots in the win.

Brittany Maholic scored 11 to lead the guests.

Conemaugh Valley 58, Blacklick Valley 51

NANTY GLO – Both squads shot 21 of 34 from the free-throw line as the Blue Jays outslugged the host Vikings. Nikki Ledwich and Jamie Cekada each scored 12 points for Conemaugh Valley.

The Vikings’ Danielle Lesso tallied 18 points while teammate Alison Verba scored 16.

Berlin 48, Rockwood 14

BERLIN – Lauren Short and Kristen Hankinson led with

11 and 10 points, respectively, as Berlin improved to 11-3.

Cambria Heights 67, Penn Cambria 58

PATTON – Danielle Bodek’s 17 points and 12 rebounds helped the Highlanders secure a win over Penn Cambria. Amanda Short scored 14 in the victory while teammates Serafina Bills and Abby Stanek scored 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Breanna Kearney and Breanna Mulhern each scored

17 points for the Panthers.

Bishop Guilfoyle 42, Central Cambria 29

EBENSBURG - Devin Stessney scored 10 points to help Bishop Guilfoyle remain unbeaten in Laurel Highlands Section 1 play with a victory at Central Cambria.

Breanne James led all scorers with 11 points for the Red Devils.

Forest Hills 85, Bishop Carroll 51

SIDMAN – The Rangers’ Becky Bard scored 30 points while Amy Weisheier scored

17 and had 19 rebounds in a LHAC win over Bishop Carroll.

Casey Gallaher had 13 points and seven assists while Forest Hills teammate Julie Marks scored 10 points. Marlee Zubek grabbed 10 rebounds in the victory.

Becky Hogue’s 16 points led the Huskies, who received a dozen points from Lauren Wyland.

Westmont 47, Johnstown 23

Visiting Westmont received 17 points and 16 rebounds from Alyssa Yewcic while outscoring the Trojans 28-9 in the second half to take home a victory. Chartice Wyatt led Johnstown with 10 points and also had

12 rebounds.

Penns Manor 56, Northern Cambria 46

NORTHERN CAMBRIA – Jessica Laney’s 14 points led a trio of Comets in double figures as Penns Manor topped Northern Cambria. Katee Gresko scored 12 points in the win and teammate Olivia Misner posted 10 points.

Liz Wolfe led the Colts with

17 points as teammate Ashley Delfonso tallied 14.

Bishop McCort 41, Richland 39

Bishop McCort outscored host Richland 13-10 in the fourth quarter to defeat the Rams.

Jill Kegg and Leah Bridges each scored nine points to lead the Crimson Crushers, who had seven 3-pointers in the game.

Katie Gehlmann topped all scorers with 15 points for Richland, which also got 10 points and eight rebounds from Sarah Pfeil.

Shade 66, Turkeyfoot Valley 37

CAIRNBROOK – The Panthers had three players reach double figures in scoring with Chelsey Pongrac’s 22 points topping the trio as Shade triumphed at home.

Becca Muha had 17 points, 13 rebounds and six steals while Ashley Manges scored 11 points and dished out eight assists. Pongrac also registered six steals.

Renee Nicholson had

12 points for the Rams while teammate Maddie Bender pitched in 11 points.

Somerset 55, Bedford 38

SOMERSET - Sydney Geary scored 20 points and Bits Barron added 12 as Somerset defeated visiting Bedford.

Summer Hartung topped the Bisons scoring while Lauren Fedorchak had 10 points.

    There were times earlier in his career when James McDonald would run into trouble and innings would slow to a crawl. Even worse, runners would disappear, and not in a good way.

    Paige Lumley was on an emotional roller coaster and seeing silver on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Richland senior had state record jumps  twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,
    1¾ inches.
    Defending state champion, second-seeded  junior Lanae Newsome of Brookville, won with a jump of 40-3½.

    Matt Dull finished his athletic career with his best on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Chestnut Ridge senior ran a career-best time of 38.12 to finish second in the 300 hurdles final, also setting another school record.

    Matt Hague was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their 11th straight loss with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.
    Hague took a 96 mph fastball from Dolis (2-4) in the back near the shoulder blade, scoring Jose Tabata and eliciting an incredulous look to the sky by the Cubs reliever.
