JOHNSTOWN —
The undefeated Johnstown Trojans have averaged 72 points per game this season, but Monday night the Trojans learned that they’re capable of grinding out a win just as well.
Johnstown (6-0) beat visiting Altoona Area High School 51-48 despite making just one field goal in the fourth quarter.
The Trojans went 10 of 12 from the foul line in the final quarter to get their sixth win of the season in as many games.
Second-year Johnstown coach Neil Cobaugh said that his team was out of shooting rhythm coming off the holiday break, but fundamentals made the difference in the win.
“We picked a bad night to shoot poorly, but our kids learned a valuable lesson about how the fundamentals of basketball can win or lose a game,” Cobaugh said. “We didn’t shoot well from the field, but we came out and knocked some free throws down.
“It’s nice to still be undefeated. The kids work hard and I’m happy for those guys. They love the game and love playing together, and you can tell on the floor.
“They’re all smiles in the locker room and they are enjoying it.”
Isaiah “Snoop” Haselrig scored
10 points in the first quarter as the Trojans built a 27-20 lead at the half. Haselrig finished with 14, but it was on defense where the junior forward’s impact was felt.
With Johnstown leading 42-41, Haselrig blocked Altoona’s Robert Johnson before going to the line to make a pair of free throws.
He then regained possession for the Trojans by stealing the ball at half court, which led to a pair of made free throws for teammate Quentin Brandon, who later sealed the game with another pair of makes.
“We turned the ball over a lot earlier in the year against Mount Lebanon and tonight was reminiscent of that,” Altoona coach Paul Hasson said. “Offensively we didn’t play well, but you’ve got to give Johnstown credit for that. They’re an athletic team and they played good defense.”
Altoona (5-3) led for most of the third quarter after a 14-7 run, but momentum was lost when Johnson, a team co-captain, left the game with a cut below the eye. Johnson had 14 points before leaving and did not score in the fourth quarter.
“Bert (Johnson) plays hard every night,” Hasson said. “He’s averaging
16 points and 12 rebounds a game against stiff competition, and he’s not a real big kid but he plays hard and gives everything he has.”
Zach Price scored 16 for the Mountain Lions while DeRon Lee added 10 points in the loss. Philip Madison finished second in scoring for the Trojans with nine points, and his hot hand late in the third quarter gave Johnstown a lead which they never relinquished.
“(Madison) is just a sophomore and he has a nice inside outside to his game,” Cobaugh said. “He set his feet well and knocked some shots down.”
Johnstown faces the Westmont Hilltoppers Wednesday.
