Conemaugh Township 43 Windber 26
DAVIDSVILLE – Conemaugh Township’s girls basketball team shrugged off the effects of an eight-day layoff to defeat rival Windber.
Kelsey Smith and Kayla Luprek each finished with 10 points and seven rebounds to lead undefeated Township (11-0). Lyndy Baer had five assists and six points.
Windber’s Ongie Null had a team-high eight points.
“We had an eight-day break and it was a little scary coming off of that,” Township coach Stacey Hazlett said. “It took us a while to get our offense moving. We got it going in the third quarter. We’re feeling good. We just want to keep our game going.”
The Indians held a two-point advantage after one quarter, but posted a 16-6 second-quarter margin to lead 25-13 at intermission.
Township used a 10-2 third-quarter advantage to pull away.
“We just really started stepping up and doing our game,” Hazlett said. “We liked to run and that’s what we were doing. Defensively I was happy with the way we played. Windber is great at outside shooting. We wanted to limit their shots. I thought our girls did a great job of that.”
Westmont Hilltop 40
Bishop McCort 35
The Hilltoppers’ 13-6 fourth-quarter advantage enabled Westmont to take a narrow victory over rival Bishop McCort.
“It was a huge defensive effort,” Westmont coach Jodi Hillegass said. “We went to a box-and-one and kept (McCort’s Jill) Kegg scoreless after that. Erin Rodgers played a great defensive game.”
Rodgers also made two clutch free throws during a 1-and-1 situation with less than 40 seconds left to put Westmont in front by three points.
“Those were key free throws,” Hillegass said. “We made a defensive play at the other end, got the ball back and Brittany Davis scored two more points (to set the final).”
Gina Rievel scored 12 points for Westmont Hilltop while Rodgers tallied 11 as Hilltop improved to 12-2 overall, 5-0 in the LHAC Section 2.
Jill Kegg and Larissa Swank each scored 12 points for host Bishop McCort, which is 7-5 overall, 3-2 in the section.
Richland 65, Bedford 26
BEDFORD – Katie Gehlmann had
11 points, seven steals and five assists, and Sarah Pfeil had 18 points and six rebounds as Richland beat host Bedford.
Kaija Holtzman had 16 points and five rebounds for the Rams.
Jazmine Williams had six points and six rebounds to lead Bedford. Kacy Blevins had four assists.
Bishop Carroll 64
Central Cambria 48
EBENSBURG – Four different Huskies scored 13 or more points as Bishop Carroll downed neighboring Central Cambria. Krista Krug led the way with 15 points while Lauren Wyland and Maude Lallemand each scored 14 points. Dani Link tallied 13 points and also collected
14 rebounds.
Katie Bracken posted 12 points for the Red Devils with another 10 points coming from Katie Ley.
Bishop Guilfoyle 71
Penn Cambria 26
CRESSON – Alyssa Ehredt scored
19 points and Halee Adams had 15 as Bishop Guilfoyle defeated host Penn Cambria.
The Mauraders used a 21-7 second-quarter advantage to pull ahead 34-14 at halftime.
Brianna Kearney led Penn Cambria with 12 points.
Forest Hills 57
Cambria Heights 39
PATTON – The Rangers staked claim to a 37-8 halftime lead and never looked back as they downed host Cambria Heights. Becky Bard scored 15 points to pace Forest Hills with another 12 points coming from Jess DiFlauro and 10 more from Briana Kostan.
Carrie Weaver’s 13 points spurred the Highlanders while teammate Amanda Short scored 12 points.
Somerset 49
Greater Johnstown 44
Hope Brock scored 21 points and Sydney Geary added another 20 as visiting Somerset tallied its first win of the season.
Greater Johnstown’s Tashayla Smith scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed 23 rebounds.
Conemaugh Valley 43
North Star 27
Carly Gruss scored 10 points to lead host Conemaugh Valley to a victory over North Star. Abby Menett grabbed 12 rebounds and Emily McCray pulled down another eight for the Blue Jays.
North Star’s Bradie Rhoades scored
12 points in defeat.
Blacklick Valley 55
Harmony 15
WESTOVER – Alison Verba scored
10 points and had 12 rebounds, and Brooke Rhoades netted 18 points as Blacklick Valley beat host Harmony.
Allison Thomas added 10 points for the Vikings. Lindsay Welteroth led Harmony with 11 points.
Shade 45, Rockwood 40
CAIRNBROOK – Double doubles from Brittany Berkey (13 points and
13 rebounds) and Becca Muha (12 points and 10 rebounds) helped push host Shade past Rockwood. Lexi Meck also grabbed
11 rebounds in the win.
The Rockets’ Sam Emert scored
21 points while teammate Kelsey Zerfoss chipped in 10 points.
Portage 52, Ferndale 29
The Mustangs outscored Ferndale 31-10 in the second half to pull away from the hosts in a WestPAC clash. Olivia McCabe’s 24-point night topped Portage while teammate Emily Chobany pitched in 15 points.
McCabe also collected 21 rebounds and blocked eight shots in the win. Emily McCabe had eight boards and five assists.
The Yellow Jackets’ Gabrielle Kull netted a dozen points while Elizabeth Chobany added 11 points to the Ferndale cause.
Cambria County Christian 41 Calvary Christian 28
MUNDYS CORNER – Natalie Sokira had 20 points and Alexis Wolfe had
15 points as Cambria County Christian beat Calvary Baptist. Sokira had nine rebounds and 11 blocked shots.
Nicole Snare led Calvary Christian with
10 points.
BOYS
Northern Cambria 79 Purchase Line 65
NORTHERN CAMBRIA – Adam Polites scored 23 points and dished out nine assists, and Jeff Hogan scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Northern Cambria defeated visiting Purchase Line.
Nick Lee had 18 points for the Colts, and Derek Bearer had 10 points. Seth Goodlin tallied a game-high 25 points for Purchase Line.
Richland 62, Bedford 34
Host Richland limited the Bisons to single-digit scoring in each of the first three quarters on its way to a Laurel Highlands win. Kyle Flick led the Rams with
19 points.
Haden Hess’ 10 points paced Bedford.
Cambria County Christian 59 Calvary Christian 32
MUNDYS CORNER – Jon Perry’s
12 points led the way for the Panthers as they downed the Conquerors. Dom Williams and Tyler Berkebile each added 10 points for Cambria County Christian, which bounded out to a 27-7 lead after a quarter.

AAABA League will open after busy offseason
The AAABA League opens on Tuesday at Point Stadium with two new, but familiar managers, a new but familiar sponsor, an expanded interleague schedule and two new franchises committed to the 2013 season.
A lot of activity took place during the offseason, including the AAABA national committee’s vote to expand the age limit to 21 years old beginning in 2013. -

Richland's Lumley settles for pair of silver medals
Paige Lumley was on an emotional roller coaster and seeing silver on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
The Richland senior had state record jumps twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,
1¾ inches.
Defending state champion, second-seeded junior Lanae Newsome of Brookville, won with a jump of 40-3½. -
Ridge’s Dull takes second with school-record time
Matt Dull finished his athletic career with his best on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
The Chestnut Ridge senior ran a career-best time of 38.12 to finish second in the 300 hurdles final, also setting another school record. -
Hit batsman lifts Pirates over Cubs
Matt Hague was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their 11th straight loss with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.
Hague took a 96 mph fastball from Dolis (2-4) in the back near the shoulder blade, scoring Jose Tabata and eliciting an incredulous look to the sky by the Cubs reliever. -
