GREENSBURG —
Hot shooting and aggressive defense conspired to end the season of the Greater Johnstown boys Tuesday night at Hempfield Area High School.
The South Fayette Lions frustrated the Trojans early with pressure wherever Johnstown moved the ball, then connected on nine of their 18 3-point attempts en route to a 67-47 victory in the second round of the PIAA Class AAA tournament.
The Lions’ Pat Zedreck led all scorers with 29 points, including six of his squad’s 3-pointers. Zedreck was the only Lion to reach double figures in scoring while Christian Brumbaugh pulled down 11 boards.
Johnstown (23-2) marked time with South Fayette early, trading baskets with the Lions on its way to a 7-6 lead on a basket by Isaiah Haselrig. The Lions (24-2) closed the frame with a 10-0 run sparked by a 3-pointer from Zedreck, who followed with another basket on the Lions’ next possession.
Zach Challingsworth and Nick Elder, who hit a 3-pointer, closed out the run for the WPIAL representative.
Zedreck opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer, opening the lead to 19-7.
“We came out and we played scared,” Johns-town coach Neil Cobaugh said. “They did to us what we’ve done to teams all year and we couldn’t handle it. They didn’t do anything we didn’t expect, nothing we didn’t talk about or emphasize. Pressure makes people forget things.”
The Trojans’ Dwight Andrews followed with two straight baskets to make it 19-11 with 6:13 left in the frame. After that, the Lions reeled off 11 of the quarter’s last 12 points highlighted by a Zedreck 3-pointer and two baskets by Brumbaugh.
The Lions added eight points to their lead in the third quarter, outscoring Johnstown 21-13 with Zedreck hitting 4 of 5 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers. A 3-pointer from Adam Silko with five seconds left in the period ran South Fayette’s advantage to 51-25.
The Trojans inched closer during the fourth quarter, using a 6-0 push in the last 2:10 to set the final. Alkwan Williams led the Trojans’ charge during the fourth with nine points.
Haselrig scored 15 points to lead Johnstown while Williams had 11 points and six rebounds.
The Trojans closed out a season that yielded a Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference title along with a District 6-AAA crown.
“These guys wanted to reach more,” Cobaugh said. “We had a great season, but unless you win a state championship, you end with a loss. This will burn for a bit. One, because we’re better than what we showed (Tuesday). It took us too long to wake up and play the way that we can play.”
South Fayette advances to play Eastern York on Friday.
