Twenty-seven area basketball squads – 14 boys and 13 girls teams – are entered in the upcoming District 6 tournament, which opens Monday at five different sites.
There are no top seeds among the 27 teams, but the Johnstown boys are the highest ranked, second in Class AAA.
The defending District 6 boys champions are the Trojans in Class AAA, Penns Valley in Class AA and Conemaugh Valley in Class A. The girls champs are Bishop Guilfoyle in Class A, Marion Center in Class AA and Forest Hills in Class AAA. The Rangers are now playing in Class AA.
Doubleheaders on Monday will be played at Hollidaysburg Junior and Senior High Schools, Richland, Central Cambria and Bishop Carroll. All openers the first three days are set to tip off at 6 p.m. with the nightcap to follow.
At the Hollidaysburg Junior High, two Class AA girls games open with Central Cambria (10) against Bellwood-Antis (7) followed by Cambria Heights (14) vs. Southern Huntingdon (3).
The Penns Manor girls (7) will face No. 10 Bishop Carroll in the opener at Central Cambria followed by the No. 13 Comets boys against fourth-seeded Northern Cambria.
At Richland, Game 1 features Bishop McCort (11) playing the Forest Hills girls, seeded sixth. The fourth-seeded Bishop McCort boys will take on No. 13 Penn Cambria in the nightcap.
A pair of Class AA games at Bishop Carroll feature the Richland girls (12) against No. 5 Westmont Hilltop followed by the Richland boys (6) against No. 11 United.
There are also two games at Hollidaysburg Senior High – the Philipsburg-Osceola girls vs. Central and the Mount Union boys against Central.
On Tuesday, four more doubleheaders will be played, with games at Hollidaysburg Junior and Senior High, Central Cambria and Richland.
At Richland, Heritage Conference rivals Blairsville (9) and Ligonier Valley (8) girls square off with Marion Center (5) playing the Central Cambria boys in the nightcap. Both games are Class AA.
The Portage girls and boys will play Class A games at Central Cambria with the girls, seeded eighth, against No. 9 Claysburg-Kimmel followed by the
No. 11 Mustangs against sixth-seeded Harmony.
At Hollidaysburg Senior High on Tuesday, the No. 8 Conemaugh Valley boys face No. 9 Belleville Mennonite in a Class A encounter, followed by the Westmont Hilltop boys, seeded 10th, taking on No. 7 Tyrone in a Class AA game.
At the junior high in Hollidaysburg, two boys Class A games are set. The evening opens with Blacklick Valley (12) against No. 5 Williamsburg with Bishop Guilfoyle (10) against No. 7 Bishop Carroll in the nightcap.
Four Class AAA games are scheduled for Wednesday, with doubleheaders at the Hollidaysburg Junior and Senior High Schools.
At the junior high, the No. 6 Somerset girls play third-seeded Huntingdon with the Golden Eagles boys, also seeded sixth, against No. 3 Lewistown in the second game.
The Greater Johnstown girls, seeded fifth, will play No. 4 Tyrone followed by No. 5 Bellefonte’s boys taking on No. 4 Forest Hills in the two games at the Hollidaysburg Senior High.

AAABA League will open after busy offseason
The AAABA League opens on Tuesday at Point Stadium with two new, but familiar managers, a new but familiar sponsor, an expanded interleague schedule and two new franchises committed to the 2013 season.

Ridge’s Dull takes second with school-record time
Matt Dull finished his athletic career with his best on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
The Chestnut Ridge senior ran a career-best time of 38.12 to finish second in the 300 hurdles final, also setting another school record. -
Hit batsman lifts Pirates over Cubs
Matt Hague was hit by a pitch from Rafael Dolis with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates sent the Chicago Cubs to their 11th straight loss with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.
Hague took a 96 mph fastball from Dolis (2-4) in the back near the shoulder blade, scoring Jose Tabata and eliciting an incredulous look to the sky by the Cubs reliever. -
