Three share lead at Sunnehanna Amateur

JOHNSTOWN — A crowd formed at the top of the leaderboard after the third round of the 59th Sunnehanna Amateur Tournament for Champions.

A three-way tie for first at

7-under 203 included Mike Miller of Brewster, N.Y., Sebastian Vazquez of Mexico City, and Bobby Wyatt, a University of Alabama player from Mobile, Ala.

Justin Thomas, the Crimson Tide player who led after each of the first two rounds, is just one stroke back at 6-under 204.

“I’m having a lot of fun,” said Vazquez, who had a 3-under-par 67 on Saturday. “I enjoy the pressure. It motivates you.”

Miller posted the best round among the trio of leaders on Saturday. He was 4-under 66.

“I had a great finish,” Miller said. “I birdied two of the last three. The round started off well. I birdied my first hole. I’ve done that the last two days. I just kind of played solid, plodded along. I made a bogey and came back and made a couple birdies.”

Miller and Vazquez played in the same group on Saturday and seemed to push each other while also sharing a few light moments.

As they closed their respective rounds on a strong note, they enthusiastically shook hands before heading to the scorer’s tent.

“I played with Sebastian today and we fed off of each other,” Miller said. “He’s a great player. It was a lot of fun.”

Wyatt set a torrid early pace.

The Crimson Tide golfer was 3-under on the front nine and picked up even more momentum with a birdie on 11. At one point, Wyatt was 9-under for the tournament and seemed poised to distance himself from the field.

“I started very well,” Wyatt said. “I was playing steady golf and hitting greens. I gave myself opportunities and took advantage of them (with birdies) on 1, 3 and 9. I turned at 3-under and hadn’t made a bogey.

“I birdied No. 11 and then I really kind of started hitting it off the tee a little poorly and missed a few fairways,” he added. “It cost me on the back. I had a bad three putt (on No. 13).

“I didn’t close at all the way I would have liked. But to be leading, whether it’s tied or leading on the last day is what I came here hoping to do.”

Thomas was in the lead at

8-under through 16 holes, but he ended with consecutive bogeys on 17 and 18. His

1-under 69 still has Thomas in a solid position entering today’s final round at the par-70 Sunnehanna Country Club.

Tyler McCumber, a University of Florida product, shot a

5-under 65 in the third round, the best score on Saturday.

McCumber is among a group of three golfers at 4-under 206 entering the final round. The others are Nicholas Reach of Moscow, Pa., and Cory Whitsett, another University of Alabama player.

Reach was 2-under 68 and Whitsett 3-under 67, on Saturday.

“Definitely it’s a big momentum round and a confidence builder,” said McCumber, the son of former PGA Tour player Mark McCumber.

Carlos Ortiz of Jalisco, Mexico, and Brinson Paolini of Virginia Beach, Va., each are

3-under 207 through three rounds. Jeffrey Kang of Fullerton, Calif., and Michael Kim of Del Mar, Calif., each are at

1-under 209.

Sunnehanna Country Club champion Derek Hayes shot an 81 on Saturday and is at 233 for the tournament. Greater Johnstown champion Aaron Patalune had a 78 in the third round and is at 240 overall.

Today’s final round begins at 8 a.m., with a shotgun start at holes No. 1 and No. 10.

The Amateur is free and open to the public.
