Local Basketball Briefs 1-18-2011

High School Boys

Berlin 66, Ferndale 46


BERLIN – Alex Will scored 19 points, giving him 1,011 for his career, and Ryan Lynch added 17 more to Berlin’s total.

Nathan Davidson’s 15 points led the Yellow Jackets, who got 10 from Ravaunn Hardrick.

Shanksville 51, Conemaugh Township 46

SHANKSVILLE – Carson Shaulis scored 14 points, Carter Slade had 10 and Shanksville picked up 23 at the foul line to defeat Conemaugh Township.

Grant Speigle had 16 points and Joe Roman 15 to lead the Indians, who sank six free throws.

Windber 66, Everett 52

EVERETT – Brett Lucas had 21 points and Ben Petro scored 10 to lead Windber.

Lucas grabbed 12 rebounds while Petro got 11. Jarid Cover had seven assists.

Everett was led by Anthony Johnston, who scored 18.

Forest Hills 74, Bedford 42

SIDMAN – Luke Gallaher’s 22 points led Forest Hills while Tanner Thomas added 14 to the winning total.

Penn Cambria 94, JCS 46

CRESSON – A.J. Leahey fell just shy of a triple-double, scoring 33 points with 14 rebounds and eight blocks as host Penn Cambria routed Johnstown Christian School.

Kevin Quinn added 17 points for the Panthers (5-5).

Jake Tuck (15 points), Keith Grasser (14) and Kevin Shook (11) scored in double figures for the Blue Jays (1-8).

Shade 70, Blacklick Valley 56

CAIRNBROOK – Kenny Gibbons had 22 points, nine steals and eight assists as host Shade beat Blacklick Valley.

M.J. Knapp added a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Brett Hart scored a dozen points and Brock Medva had 15 for the Panthers (11-1).

Dalton Cesarz scored 21 points for Blacklick Valley (5-7).

Cambria County Christian 64, Belleville Mennonite 53

MUNDYS CORNER – Josiah Perry scored 18 points and Ty Maykovich added 14 in a home victory for Cambria County Christian, which improved to 10-0 on the season.

Nate Metzler’s 20 points paced Belleville Mennonite (6-6) while Micah Peachey and Sam Morgan combined for 24.

High School Girls

Cambria Heights 70, Bedford 42


BEDFORD – Serafina Bills scored 22 points and Danielle Bodek added 10 to help Cambria Heights coach Lee Stanek notch the 200th win of his 16-year coaching career.

“It was pretty neat to get it,” Stanek said. “It just shows I’ve been around a long time and got to coach a lot of neat kids.”

Leslie Fedorchak led Bedford with 14 points while Sheri Hartung scored 10.

Bishop McCort 68, Central Cambria 63

Bishop McCort built a big lead then held off Central Cambria for a non-section win at home.

The Crimson Crushers were led by 19 points from Larissa Swank while Jill Kegg added 17 and Beth Sheridan chipped in 11.

Emily Wright had 18 points to top the Red Devils, who also got 16 points each from Taylor Swatsworth and Breanne James.

The teams combined to shoot 72 fouls with McCort going 24 of 39 from the line and Central Cambria, 17 of 33.

Belleville Mennonite 51, Cambria County Christian 16

MUNDYS CORNER – Belleville Mennonite held Cambria County Christian scoreless in the fourth quarter en route to a lopsided road victory.

Allysah Aldinger scored 13 points for Belleville Mennonite (2-4).

No players scored in double figures for Cambria County Christian (6-8).

Forest Hills 66, Johnstown 24

Amy Wiesheier had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead Forest Hills at Johnstown.

Becky Bard scored 14 points for Forest Hills while Casey Gallaher had five steals and five assists.

Chartice Wyatt’s 10 points led the Trojans. She also nabbed nine rebounds.

Richland 57, Penn Cambria 33

Richland held visiting Penn Cambria to 15 points through the first three quarters and cruised to a victory in the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference.

Katie Gehlmann scored 21 points to go along with five steals and six assists for Richland (8-5). Kaija Holtzman had 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Sarah Pfeil added 16 points.

Brianna Mulhearn led the Panthers (3-7) with 10 points.

Conemaugh Valley 55, Rockwood 32

Nikki Ledwich shot 73 percent from the floor and scored a game-high 26 points for Conemaugh Valley.

Carly Gruss had eight assists for the Blue Jays (8-3) while Courtney McCallay added six rebounds.

Kelsey Zerfoss paced Rockwood (4-6) with 10 points.

Turkeyfoot 69, Salisbury-Elk Lick 60

SALISBURY – Salisbury-Elk Lick’s Alayna Harshberger scored 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in a losing effort.

The hosts also got 17 points and 17 rebounds from Lydia Hale-Cooper and 11 points by Emily Beitzel.

Blacklick Valley 61, Berlin 55

NANTY GLO – Blacklick Valley’s Jami Kish had 16 points, Alison Verba added 15 and Danielle Lesso produced 13 in a win at home.

Berlin was led by Shelby Coughenour with 18 points and Lauren Short with 14.

Windber 54, Ferndale 32

Cheyenne Feathers and Courtney Petrunak had 13 and 10 points, respectively, to lead Windber to victory at Ferndale.

Elizabeth Chobany’s 14 points fronted the hosts.

    The AAABA League opens on Tuesday at Point Stadium with two new, but familiar managers, a new but familiar sponsor, an expanded interleague schedule and two new franchises committed to the 2013 season.
    A lot of activity took place during the offseason, including the AAABA national committee’s vote to expand the age limit to 21 years old beginning in 2013.

    Paige Lumley was on an emotional roller coaster and seeing silver on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Richland senior had state record jumps  twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,
    1¾ inches.
    Defending state champion, second-seeded  junior Lanae Newsome of Brookville, won with a jump of 40-3½.

    Matt Dull finished his athletic career with his best on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Chestnut Ridge senior ran a career-best time of 38.12 to finish second in the 300 hurdles final, also setting another school record.
