Local Basketball Briefs 2-12-2011

JOHNSTOWN — High School Boys

North Star 59 Windber 41

WINDBER – The Ramblers’ Brett Lucas eclipsed the

500-rebound mark for his career, pulling down seven boards to go with his 11 points, but it was North Star that took home a WestPAC victory.

Jacob Fleegle led the Cougars with 15 points while teammates Beau Soberdash (12 points) and Wade Walker (10 points) aided the North Star cause.

Ben Petro led Windber with 13 points.

Bishop McCort 70 DuBois Central 54

Nemo Trexler scored

13 points and pulled down

16 rebounds as Bishop McCort found itself on the right end of a victory over the visiting Cardinals.

Mason del Rosario scored

12 points while Crimson Crushers teammates Jerqual Wilson and Patrick O’Reilly each tallied 10.

Pat Marshall led DuBois Central Catholic with 17 points while Tyler Fitzpatrick scored 11 points and Zach Pentz 10.

Blacklick Valley 67 Conemaugh Twp. 59

DAVIDSVILLE – Dalton Cesarz 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, and Mike Stefanick scored 19 points as visiting Blacklick Valley beat Conemaugh Township in the WestPAC.

Victor Manda added

10 points for the Vikings. Dillon Boyer had a game-high

30 points for Township, and Joe Roman added 10 points.

Cambria County 69 Grace Prep 46

STATE COLLEGE – Dom Williams scored 23 points and Josiah Perry added another

12 as Cambria County Christian picked up a road win.

Jaquan Masteller’s 14 points led the Storm while teammate John Rothgeb pitched in a dozen points.

Bishop Carroll 62

EBENSBURG – Dwight Andrews’ 27 points led the Trojans to a victory over host Bishop Carroll. Alkwan Williams’

21 points and another 17 from Quintin Brandon supported Andrews’ game-high total.

Williams also had

16 rebounds while Brandon had 12 assists and Andrews seven assists.

Nick Lassak scored 18 points to lead the Huskies while Dylan Link tallied 16 points.  

High School Girls

JCS 43

Turkeyfoot Valley 38

HOLLSOPPLE – Lindsey Najjar had 18 points, and Kaylla Conahan had 10 points as host Johnstown Christian defeated Turkeyfoot Valley on Saturday.

Renee Nicholson had

10 points to lead Turkeyfoot Valley.

Late Friday

Bishop Carroll 53 Bedford 34

BEDFORD - Gabby Gueguen scored 14 points, Becky Hogue had 13 and Dani Link added

12 for Bishop Carroll, which earned a come-from-behind road win at Bedford.

Hannah Grimes scored

15 points to top the Bisons, who also got 10 points from Summer Hartung, 16 rebounds from Lauren Fedorchak and 10 boards from Maggi Secrest.

Cambria Heights 55 Johnstown 33

Serafina Bills scored a game-high 19-points and Carrie Weaver added 12 in Cambria Heights’ road win over Johnstown.

    The AAABA League opens on Tuesday at Point Stadium with two new, but familiar managers, a new but familiar sponsor, an expanded interleague schedule and two new franchises committed to the 2013 season.
    A lot of activity took place during the offseason, including the AAABA national committee’s vote to expand the age limit to 21 years old beginning in 2013.

    Paige Lumley was on an emotional roller coaster and seeing silver on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Richland senior had state record jumps  twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,
    1¾ inches.
    Defending state champion, second-seeded  junior Lanae Newsome of Brookville, won with a jump of 40-3½.

    Matt Dull finished his athletic career with his best on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Chestnut Ridge senior ran a career-best time of 38.12 to finish second in the 300 hurdles final, also setting another school record.
