Polamalu, Kirschke out
PITTSBURGH – Steelers safety Troy Polamalu did not practice all week because of a left knee injury and will not play Sunday in Kansas City. He may miss the Nov. 29 game at Baltimore as well.
Polamalu sat out the Steelers’ second through fifth games with a ligament tear, only to injure the same knee during an 18-12 loss to Cincinnati on Sunday.
Polamalu’s latest injury is to a different ligament. He wore a heavy brace as he watched practice this week.
Defensive end Travis Kirschke will sit out his third consecutive game with a torn left calf muscle.
He had been filling in for Aaron Smith, who is out for the season with a torn right rotator cuff.
Nick Eason will start again at left defensive end. Tyrone Carter will start at safety.

UPJ to host Lady Cat Classic
Head coach Sasha Palmer and the Pitt Johnstown Lady Cat basketball team will play host to the 2009 Lady Cat Classic today and Sunday at the Sports Center.
Today, Slippery Rock University will take on Lake Erie (Ohio) College at 1 p.m., followed by Pitt-Johnstown battling Georgian Court (N.J.) University at 3 p.m.
The classic will wrap-up on Sunday with Georgian Court playing Slippery Rock at 1 p.m. The Lady Cats will play Lake Erie at 3 p.m.
This year’s event is sponsored by Comfort Inn, Sleep Inn and Cummings Trophies and Engraving.
Penn State falls to Tulane
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Tulane’s Kevin Sims made a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 19 seconds to play and the Green Wave held on to beat Penn State 63-60 Friday in the second round of the Charleston Classic at Carolina First Arena.
Aaron Holmes led Tulane (1-2) with 17 points and Kris Richard added 11.
Talor Battle scored 17 points for Penn State (2-2).
Tulane led by 10 with 7:57 to play, but Penn State battled back, despite shooting 27.6 percent from the field.
The Green Wave shot 36 percent from the field.
Penn State led 25-24 after a closely contested first half in which neither team led by more than five points.
Tulane will play at 12:30 p.m. Sunday against the winner of Friday’s game between Davidson and La Salle. Penn State will play at
10 a.m. Sunday against the loser.
Mountain Hawks top Red Flash
BETHLEHEM – Senior Britney Hodges finished the night 14 points closer to her 1,000th-career point as the St. Francis women’s basketball team fell to the defending Patriot League Champion Lehigh 75-63 on Friday night at Stabler Arena.
Hodges led the Red Flash in scoring, while Allison Daly was the only other St. Francis player to finish in double figures with
10 points.
St. Francis will travel to nationally ranked Pitt for a Tuesday night matchup. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets were able to cultivate the emotion and high spirits to a 7-1 win in the second Jess Ambroe Classic. -

Rams roll past Blue Jays
It had been a while since the Richland Rams had played a varsity hockey game. Though the Rams’ last action came on Jan. 12, Richland showed little rust as it trounced Conemaugh Valley 12-1 Friday evening at Cambria County War Memorial.
Richland (7-3-2) posted four goals in the game’s first 4:33 as it buried the Blue Jays (1-14) early. -

Mountain Cats look to get Pecora closer to No. 500
In some ways, it’s the perfect time for Pitt-Johnstown wrestling coach Pat Pecora to be reflective.
After all, his eighth-ranked Mountain Cats will be holding their final home match this evening when Anderson visits at 7 p.m. Pecora will be saying goodbye to six seniors, which is always an emotional time for him.
But he’s not ready to look back on his legendary career, even as he closes in on his 500th career win. -
Judge sets May trial date in Sandusky abuse case
A judge said Friday he would decide soon whether to grant former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky greater freedom – and visits from his young grandchildren – while he awaits trial on child sex-abuse charges, but prosecutors countered that Sandusky’s home is not a safe place for children.
Judge John Cleland set a tentative trial date of May 14 for Sandusky and promised to rule quickly on a number of other issues, including dueling requests for changes to his bail restrictions. -
Jordan Staal expected to return to Pens’ lineup today
Jordan Staal’s left knee is fine. His face, however, could use some work.
The Pittsburgh Penguins center plans to play today against Winnipeg in his first game since injuring the knee in a loss to the New York Rangers on Jan. 6.
The road back has gone smoothly enough until Staal started practicing with his teammates this week. -
UPDATED Bedford advances in PIAA wrestling in odd way
It’s not often that a team can win a match at the PIAA Class AA Dual-Meet Championships while giving up two forfeits, but that’s exactly what Bedford did this afternoon at the Giant Center.
In fact, the Bisons won 30-29 over Pen Argyl because they forfeited.
