10 vying for Point Stadium Award

JOHNSTOWN — The field is set for the 2009 Point Stadium Award after Bishop McCort senior running back Josh Seidel used a record-breaking performance to claim the October nomination and followed up with a four-touchdown night to take the November honor.

For the first time, there will be 10 monthly winners vying for the annual award and scholarship, though Seidel claimed two of the monthly nominations. Because of the state-of-the art playing surface installed at the Point, Pitt-Johnstown played February baseball in Johnstown at a time when most college programs open their schedule playing in southern states.

Seidel took the October monthly honor by rushing for a McCort single-game record 327 yards and he tied his late father, Dave’s, single-game record of six touchdowns scored in a 69-35 victory over Richland on Oct. 2 in a meeting of undefeated LHAC teams. Seidel’s performance drew national attention as he was featured in Sports Illustrated’s Faces in the Crowd and was ESPN RISE East Region Player of the Week.

Seidel earned the November Award by rushing for 177 yards and four touchdowns in 10 carries during a District 6 Class A playoff victory over Penns Manor on Nov. 20. In that game, Seidel broke McCort’s single-season scoring record previously shared by Artrell Hawkins, Pete Duranko and Eric Lowry.

The Crimson Crushers standout back and his teammates will play Tri-Valley in the PIAA Class A semifinals on Friday at State College. A berth in the state championship game is on the line for the 13-0 Crushers.

Seidel and eight other monthly winners are eligible for the annual award that will be presented during a Dec. 30 luncheon at the downtown Holiday Inn. Former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman and current radio broadcaster Craig Wolfley will be the featured speaker during the 11:45 a.m. event geared toward the downtown lunch crowd.

Other monthly winners are:

n September-Ted Worthington, Blacklick Valley football player.

n August-Drew Shaulis, Delweld AAABA Tournament pitcher.

n July-Brett Vescovi, Delweld pitcher.

n June-Landon Wahl, Martella’s Pharmacy pitcher.

n May-Matt Donaldson, Meyersdale pitcher.

n April-Ben Watkins, Pitt-Johnstown pitcher.

n March-Evan Petro, Lock Haven baseball player.

n February-Matt Petrowsky, Pitt-Johnstown baseball player.

Additionally, the Point Stadium Award Committee recognizes various Play of the Month performances.

Bishop McCort placekicker Dane Domonkos received the November award for his record-breaking kicking performance and point totals. Richland receiver Ryan Sylvia took October Play of the Month with a 29-yard touchdown reception against Bishop McCort.

Other Plays of the Month were recorded by Seidel in September; Delweld shortstop George Roberts in August; Martella’s Pharmacy center fielder Jon Kirby in July; Martella’s infielder Colin Harrington in June; Pitt-Johnstown’s Josh Campanella in April; and UPJ’s Matt Hanley in February.

Tickets to the luncheon are $20 each or $160 for a table of eight. For more information about reservations, call 255-3758 by Dec. 23.
