McCort, Richland players garner Point Stadium Awards

JOHNSTOWN — A dominating performance by a two-way lineman, a seven-touchdown game, and a multi-purpose outing all led to recognition by the Point Stadium Award Committee.

Bishop McCort veteran lineman Gap Barbin received September Point Stadium Award honors for his contributions on both sides of the ball in the Crushers’ 10-6 victory over Forest Hills in a defensive showcase on Sept. 7.

Barbin had six solo stops and nine tackles against the Rangers. His fumble recovery at the Forest Hills 44-yard line set up the game-winning touchdown. On offense, Barbin anchored a line that enabled the Crushers to rush for 123 yards, an average of 3.44 per carry, and pass for 44.

Richland freshman back Colby Warshel and McCort senior receiver-kicker Jordan Spangler shared October Point Stadium Award honors.

Warshel had an incredible seven-touchdown effort in Richland’s 58-36 Oct. 4 victory over Bishop McCort in junior high football.

Warshel rushed 12 times for 194 yards and four touchdowns. He caught three passes for 62 yards and three touchdowns. The freshman also threw a 22-yard pass on offense and had an interception that he returned 35 yards on defense.

He also made eight tackles to round out a complete effort.

Spangler had six receptions for 118 yards, including a 34-yard touchdown in a 37-0 victory which snapped Bishop Guilfoyle’s six-game winning streak on Oct. 26.

Spangler returned an interception 32 yards for a touchdown. He also kicked a 23-yard field goal and booted two extra-points.

Barbin, Warshel and Spangler will join previous Point Stadium Award monthly nominees: Martella’s AAABA Tournament pick-up player Josh Staniscia (August); Berkley Hills Renegades pitcher Nate Spohn (July); Laurel Auto Group pitcher Mike Nowicki (June); Bishop McCort pitcher Justin Vardian (May); McCort pitcher Jesse Cooper (April); Pitt-Johnstown outfielder-DH Drew Ebersole (March); and Pitt-Johnstown outfielder Drew Westover (February).

The annual Point Stadium Award and $1,000 scholarship will be presented to the 2012 winner during a Dec. 28 banquet at The Aces in Cambria City.

Two Bedford High School teammates shared the September Point Stadium Play of the Month nomination for their 81-yard touchdown pass play against Bishop McCort on Sept. 21.

Bisons quarterback Aaron Henry eluded tacklers and passed a a wide open Cody Blevins downfield. Blevins broke free to complete the long touchdown, though McCort won 38-14.

Greater Johnstown senior Philip Madison took October Point Stadium Play of the Month honors for his 61-yard touchdown run in a 28-18 setback to Bishop McCort on Oct. 12.

Madison worked out of the wildcat formation to spark a Johnstown team that trailed 28-0 before mounting a comeback with three fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Previous Point Stadium Play of the Month nominees include: Berkley Hills Renegades shortstop Matt Kastelic (co-August); Martella’s Pharmacy slugger Luke Williams (co-August); Martella’s infielder Jimmy Stenger (July); Berkley Hills right fielder Brett Marabito (June); Conemaugh Valley center fielder Patrick Callahan (May); Bishop McCort center fielder Nemo Trexler (co-April); and UPJ’s Westover (co-April).
