High school basketball in brief

Boys

Westmont Hilltop 66, Penn Cambria 53


Westmont Hilltop raced out to a 16-4 first-quarter lead and never looked back in a 13-point victory over visiting Penn Cambria on Monday night in a Laurel Highlands non-section game.

Quentin Brandon led the Hilltoppers with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Stephen Flick added 19 points and 13 boards. Joe Glennon also reached double digits, scoring 10 points.

Penn Cambria was led by Mac Behe, who scored 17 points. A.J. Leahey added 15 points in the loss.

The Hilltoppers improved to 12-2. The Panthers fell to 10-5.



Greater Johnstown 86, Cambria Heights 60

The host Trojans were led by matching 22-point efforts from Dwight Andrews and Alkwan Williams as they defeated Cambria Heights.

Williams also had 15 boards for the Trojans, who received 18 points from Mark Watson and another 12 points from Phillip Madison.

Isaac Vescovi netted 27 points for the Highlanders while teammate Nathan Bearer scored 14.



Richland 67, Central Cambria 44

Kyle Flick poured in 18 points as Richland blew out Central Cambria.

The Red Devils had just one player reach double figures. Zach Woodley led the squad with 12 points.

In addition to Flick, the Rams had two more players hit double digits. Luke Shertzer and Matt Shaffer scored 12 points apiece.

Richland improved to 6-9. Central Cambria slipped to 4-10.

Somerset 78, Forest Hills 65

SOMERSET - Jake Close scored a game-high 18 points, including four 3-pointers, as host Somerset downed Forest Hills.

The Golden Eagles also got 16 points apiece from Justin Harshbarger and Eddie Buck.

Justin Smith topped the Rangers with 17 points.



Cambria County Christian 71, Seeds of Faith 31

INDIANA – Dom Williams had 22 points to lead the Panthers to a comfortable win over Seeds of Faith.

Seeds of Faith 49, Cambria County Christian 44 (OT)


 INDIANA – The Falcons charged back late, outscoring Cambria County Christian 24-13 in the fourth to force overtime before passing up the Panthers for the victory.

Anna Shirley led Seeds of Faith with 34 points. The Panthers’ Alexis Wolfe scored 29 points.



Conemaugh Township 73, Blacklick Valley 25

NANTY GLO – Kelsey Smith’s 16 points led a quartet of Indians in double-figure scoring as Conemaugh Township hammered Blacklick Valley.

Carly Baer tallied 15 points with Katie Reckner scoring 13 points and Lyndy Baer adding a dozen more to the ledger. Reckner led the Indians on the glass with 13 rebounds while Smith dished out seven assists.

Alison Verba’s 11 points highlighted the Vikings.



Conemaugh Valley 54, Ferndale 39

Despite trailing at the end of the first quarter, Conemaugh Valley stormed back over the final three quarters of play to defeat Ferndale.

Jen Percinsky led Conemaugh Valley with 17 points. Ferndale was led by Elizabeth Chobany and Gabrielle Kull, who scored 14 points apiece. The Blue Jays improved to 10-3. The Yellow Jackets slipped to 1-10.



Portage 66, North Star 53

BOSWELL – Emily Chobany scored 20 points and Olivia McCabe had 18 points and 21 rebounds as Portage defeated host North Star in a WestPAC North clash.

Paisley Zatek added 13 points for the Mustangs.

Amanda Lohr topped the Cougars with 20 points while Bradie Rhoades added 14 points. Valerie Bowser paced North Star with 10 rebounds while Lohr and Rhoades each had seven.  



Penn Cambria 84, Greater Johnstown 45

CRESSON – The Panthers’ Brianna Kearney scored a game-high 38 points as Penn Cambria dropped visiting Greater Johnstown.

Brianna Mulhern added 17 points in victory.

Janay Myers’ 22 points and 16 rebounds led the Trojans while teammate Tashayla Smith poured in 16 points, 13 rebounds and had five blocked shots.



Rockwood 64, Salisbury-Elk Lick 56

SALISBURY – Sam Emert netted 24 points and Rockwood teammates Kelsey Zerfoss and Sara Romesberg added 14 and 11 points, respectively as the Rockets brought down the host Elks.

Alayna Harshberger had the hot hand for Salisbury-Elk Lick, scoring 30 points while collecting 17 rebounds. Kylee Short scored 15 points in the loss.

    Paige Lumley was on an emotional roller coaster and seeing silver on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Richland senior had state record jumps  twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,
    1¾ inches.
    Defending state champion, second-seeded  junior Lanae Newsome of Brookville, won with a jump of 40-3½.
