Local Basketball Briefs 1-27-2012

ALTOONA — High School Boys

Greater Johnstown 70

Bishop Guilfoyle 45

ALTOONA – The Trojans stormed out to a 39-13 lead in the first half and never looked back as they trounced Bishop Guilfoyle. Alkwan Williams had 18 points and 17 rebounds in the win while teammate Dwight Andrews netted a game-high 19 points. Phillip Madison also threw in 18 points for Greater Johnstown.

The Marauders’ Brandon Drenning scored 15 points while teammates Nate Nardelli and Zach Patterson each scored 10.

Cambria Heights 74 Richland 63

PATTON – Behind 25 points from Isaac Vescovi and another 19 from Nathan Bearer, the Highlanders managed to outslug Richland in a physical contest. Cambria Heights shot

28 of 40 from the free-throw line with the Rams hitting 22 of

33 shots from the line.

Brad Hoppel pulled down

13 rebounds in the win. 

Kyle Flick’s 21 points led Richland, which received

12 more from Ryan Fleming.

Conemaugh Twp. 69 Ferndale 17

DAVIDSVILLE – Dillon Boyer and Josh Burns scored 15 points each to lead Conemaugh Township.

Grant Speigle had 10 steals and eight assists for the Indians, who jumped off to a 23-2 start and never looked back.

Ferndale’s Carlos Mason had 11 rebounds.

Conemaugh Valley 72

Blacklick Valley 48

Dalton Uncapher’s double double – 13 points and 11 rebounds – along with 20 points from Hunter Furman and 18 more from Brandon Kendera helped the Blue Jays soar past visiting Blacklick Valley.

The Vikings were led by Dalton Cesarz’s 23 points. 

Windber 72

North Star 69 (OT)

WINDBER – Dan Tomlinson led a quartet of Windber scorers in double figures with 18 points as the Ramblers outlasted rival North Star in overtime. Joe Pipon, who also had nine rebounds, scored 13 points while fellow Ramblers Matt Barkley and Andy Mock scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Cougars’ Beau Soberdash scored 23 points while Cory Bloom netted 16 points. Brandon Smith contributed 13 points to the North Star cause.

Cambria County 65 DuBois Christian 36

MUNDYS CORNER – Dom Williams netted 26 points as the Panthers roared past visiting DuBois Christian.

Bryan Jordan scored

20 points in defeat.

Penn Cambria 76 Bedford 53

BEDFORD – Matching

16-point efforts from A.J. Leahey and Devin Lawhead boosted the Panthers to a win over Bedford. Nathan Keagy scored

14 points and Joel Myers tallied 11 more for Penn Cambria, which saw Leahey and Keagy each grab 10 rebounds.

Tyler Black’s 22 points spurred the Bisons.

High School Girls

DuBois Christian 33 Cambria County 27

MUNDYS CORNER – Katelin Stubbs’ 15 points led the way for DuBois Christian as it downed the host Panthers. Bethanie Kriner scored a dozen in the victory.

Cambria County Christian’s Natalie Sokira led all scorers with 18 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.

Penn Cambria 50 Bedford 31

BEDFORD – Brianna Kearney scored 21 points and Brianna Mulhern added 10 to lead Penn Cambria.

Bedford got 11 points from Summer Hartung.

Ligonier Valley 52 Purchase Line 22

LIGONIER – The Rams collected 15 of their 37 steals in the first quarter as they leapt out to a 19-0 lead after a quarter and cruised to a win over the Red Dragons. Kristen Gabelt led Ligonier Valley with 14 points and eight steals, Kyra Ludwig scored 11 points and produced eight steals while teammate Maddy Grimm posted seven steals of her own.

Ashley Prugh’s 10 points topped Purchase Line.

College Men

St. Francis, N.Y. 75 St. Francis, Pa. 65

LORETTO – Akeem Johnson scored 22 points and St. Francis, N.Y. beat St. Francis, Pa. for its first road win against the Red Flash since 2006.

St. Francis, Pa. held an 11-9 lead with 10 minutes left in the first half before Ben Mockford sank a 3-pointer to give the Terriers (10-10, 7-2 Northeast Conference) their first lead and spark a 14-4 run.

Mockford, who finished with 11, had eight points during the run while Johnson added six.

The Red Flash (5-14, 4-4) cut the Terriers lead to four, 23-19, but Johnson converted a three-point play, and Travis Nichols made a trey with 14 seconds left to help St. Francis, N.Y. take a 37-24 halftime lead.

St. Francis, Pa. outshot St. Francis, N.Y. from the field

49 percent to 46 percent but the Red Flash committed

22 turnovers, 15 in the first half.

Pitt-Johnstown 93 Ohio Valley 71

VIENNA, W.Va. – Pitt-Johnstown shot 57 percent from the field, including 11-15 from

3-point range, and used a 15-0 run to close out the first half with 16-point lead in a win over Ohio Valley.

  Jordan Miller scored 20 points, and Bill Luther added 18 on a night that saw all five starters score in double figures to help the Mountain Cats improve to 10-7 overall and 8-4 in the WVIAC.

Patrick Grubbs tallied

16 points and nine reobunds, and Nick Novak had 16 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Paul Weatherly finished with 10 points and nine reobunds.

College Women

Pitt-Johnstown 86 Ohio Valley 68

VIENNA, W.Va. – Kaitlynn Fratz scored a game-high 24 points, including 18 in the first half to help Pitt-Johnstown build a 23-point lead in a victory at Ohio Valley.

Pitt-Johnstown improved to 7-9 overall and 5-7 in conference-play.

Sara Trimarco finished with 18 points, four rebounds, and nine assists, while Nicole Carman added 14 points. The Lady Cats also got seven points from Kayla Loughner, and six points and seven rebounds from Inaya Stephenson.

Kelsey Sleighter pulled down six rebounds in the win.

    Paige Lumley was on an emotional roller coaster and seeing silver on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Richland senior had state record jumps  twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,
    1¾ inches.
    Defending state champion, second-seeded  junior Lanae Newsome of Brookville, won with a jump of 40-3½.

    The Chestnut Ridge senior ran a career-best time of 38.12 to finish second in the 300 hurdles final, also setting another school record.
