JOHNSTOWN —
Walks proved to be the scourge of the Chicago Metro Des Plaines Patriots Friday morning at Point Stadium.
Of the six walks issued by Patriots starter Sam Dickstein, five scored and helped the New Orleans Boosters stay alive
– albeit for just a couple more hours – in the AAABA Tournament with a 7-0 win.
While building a 6-0 lead over the first three innings, New Orleans collected just two hits, a two-run double by Chad Gough-Fortenberry in the first and a single to left by Alex Prestenback in the third.
The support was more than enough for New Orleans’ Michael Wisecarver, who allowed five hits over seven innings with five strikeouts.
“We just did an outstanding job of pitching,” New Orleans manager Bill Babin said. “Our hitters did a wonderful job of staying disciplined in the zone and making their pitchers throw strikes.”
The Boosters jumped out to their lead early as Gough-Fortenberry doubled off the screen in left-center field to score Beau Boudreaux and Sean McMullen, who preceded him with walks. Gough-Fortenberry scored when a throw by Jason Cohen from third sailed over the head of catcher Keith Brand.
Back-to-back walks led to New Orleans’ next two runs in the second as Briggs Barrios and Blake Butera walked and scored. Barrios came home when Dickstein tossed a wild pitch while facing Boudreaux.
Butera scored on a sacrifice fly by McMullen.
Another New Orleans run started with a walk when Scott Fabre drew a base on balls and eventually scored on a failed pickoff attempt by Brand to third rolled into left field.
During that same span, Chicago Metro left six runners on base, with four in scoring position. In total, the Patriots left seven runners in scoring position.
“You can’t win a ballgame if you can’t score any runs,” Chicago Metro manager Mike Schultz said. “For a while New Orleans had five runs on one hit. We played a pretty sloppy game. We left seven guys on in scoring position. We didn’t get the key hits today.”
Fabre singled in scored in the seventh for New Orleans’ final run. A double to right by Broussard chased in the New Orleans right fielder.
Stone Speer preserved the shutout for the Boosters with two innings of no-hit relief.
“Our defense has just been outstanding all year,” Babin said. “The things you can keep consistent are pitching and defense, and we’ve been able to do that.”
