The Central Cambria girls cross country team wrapped up another Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference dual-meet title last week finishing with a 9-0 mark.
It came down to the final regular-season meet between the Red Devils and Westmont Hilltop to determine the champion. The Ebensburg squad defeated the Hilltoppers, 20-35, to claim the crown.
Alyssa Brandis of Central Cambria was the top finisher in 18:47. The other Red Devils in the top 10 included Jordan Hayward (second), Hannah Swope (fourth), Jen Bracken (fifth) and Olivia Lipnic (eighth). Westmont also had five runners in the top 10 with Hannah Dorian (third) topping the Hilltoppers. Maura Glennon (sixth), Libby Atterbury (seventh), Paige Lamberson (ninth) and Sarah Clark (10th) were Westmont’s other top finishers.
Somerset claimed the boys title also with a perfect 9-0 mark. The Golden Eagles finished ahead of Westmont, which was 8-1.
The Laurel Highlands championship meet is set for Wednesday at the Pitt-Johnstown course.
The District 6 championships will be held on Oct. 27 at Indian Valley Elementary and Intermediate School in Reedsville. The District 5 championships will be held on Oct. 24 at Bedford Vo-Tech.
The Central Cambria girls will be competing in Class A while the Westmont girls are in Class AA. The Somerset boys, along with Bedford, will be running with District 6 in Class AA and the Hilltoppers are in Class A.
Gridiron grit: Bellwood-Antis, the lone undefeated team in Class A, sits atop the District 6 rankings with Bishop Guilfoyle (6-1), Portage (6-1) and Penns Manor (6-1) in the next three slots. Juniata Valley (6-1), Homer-Center (6-1), Bishop McCort (5-2) and Glendale (5-2) round out the top eight.
Still hoping to climb into one of the top eight spots are Northern Cambria (5-2), Blacklick Valley (5-2), Moshannon Valley (4-3) and Blairsville (4-3).
Richland, the only unbeaten team in Class AA at 7-0, continues to top the standings followed by Central (5-2), Bald Eagle Area (5-2) and Ligonier Valley (6-1). Rounding out the top eight are Cambria Heights (5-2), Tyrone (4-3), Juniata (4-3) and Penn Cambria (4-3), which plays Richland this week.
Forest Hills is currently in the ninth spot with a 4-3 record.
Somerset (5-2) is second in Class AAA behind undefeated Clearfield (7-0) with University Prep (4-1) and Punxsutawney (4-3) in the other two slots.
In District 5 Class A, Northern Bedford and Berlin are both undefeated and ranked first and second, respectively. Windber and North Star are both 5-2. In Class AA, Chestnut Ridge is 4-3 and Everett is 3-4.
Bellwood-Antis plays at Northern Bedford this Friday and that will have an impact on both districts.
