Gylling has scoring touch for Tomahawks

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Cody Gylling tallied four points and Jordan Watt scored goals less than two minutes apart in the first period as the Johnstown Tomahawks earn their most decisive victory of the season by beating the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings, 6-2, on Sunday afternoon.

Kalamazoo (9-6-1, 19 points) jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Taylor Burden scored his fourth goal of the season at the 17:14 mark, but it was short-lived.

Watt, off an assist from Gylling, beat Jr. K-Wings defenseman Donovan Gardinar in a one-on-one situation near the left circle and fired a game-tying shot past goaltender Alex Okicki 48 seconds after Burden’s goal. With only 10 seconds left in the first period, Gylling placed a cross-ice pass through the neutral zone right to Watt, who finished for his sixth goal of the season for the Tomahawks (7-5-5, 19 points).

Kalamazoo tied the game in the second period on Danny Hamburg’s power-play goal at 13:50.

Once again, Johnstown, which moved into a fourth place tie in the NAHL’s North Division with the win, responded quickly.

Just barely a minute after Kalamazoo’s goal, Gylling buried a rebound off a Casey Nelson shot for a 3-2 lead for his first of two goals. It was Johnstown’s fourth power-play goal of the weekend series and cemented its second road win in its past three away games.

Recently acquired Andrew McDonald scored his first goal with the Tomahawks for a 4-2 lead. McDonald was traded to Johnstown from Fresno on Friday for Brandon Brossoit.

Mitch Kontny added a goal for the Tomahawks, who return home Saturday for a weekend series against the Springfield Junior Blues.
