BUCKHANNON, W.Va. —
Danny Branch hit a 3-pointer with a second remaining as Pitt-Johns-town erased a five-point deficit with
25 seconds left for a 96-95 victory at West Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday.
Nick Novak scored a game-high 23 points while Patrick Grubbs added 21 for UPJ (5-0, 4-0 in WVIAC).
The Mountain Cats, who are receiving votes in the NCAA Division II national poll, built a 13-point lead six minutes into the second half, but a big West Virginia Wesleyan run erased the deficit and gave the Bobcats (2-1, 2-1) an eight-point lead with six minutes to play.
UPJ trailed 95-90 with 25 seconds remaining before scoring six unanswered, including Branch’s game-winner, to remain undefeated.
Earlier in the day, Branch was named the WVIAC co-player of the week with Concord’s Javaughn Acree-Manuel after scoring 23 points in a victory over Charleston.
West Virginia Wesleyan led by as many as 6 at 26-20, but UPJ answered with an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 31-26 lead.
After two ties and six more lead changes, UPJ got a pair of free throws from Grubbs with a second left in the half to take a 50-47 advantage into the break.
UPJ went on an 18-8 run in the second half to extend the lead to 13, but the Bobcats battled back to take an 80-78 lead.
Grubbs had 21 points while Bill Luther and Branch chipped in with 15 apiece. Greater Johns-town grad Paul Weatherly had 10 points.
