ALTOONA —
New Bishop Guilfoyle head coach Justin Wheeler realized his team had a tough draw to open the high school football season.
Wheeler, the former Penn Cambria assistant coach, knew too well about Johnstown’s deep and talented group of playmakers.
“You look at some teams and they have one good kid, and you say if you stop that one kid, you have a chance,” Wheeler said after the Trojans beat his Marauders 41-13 on Saturday night at Mansion Park.
“Johnstown, they have 11 good kids. Across the board they are very talented. They’ve got an incredible line, maybe the best quarterback in the league, skilled guys at every position and speed. It’s a difficult task.”
The Trojans built a 41-0 halftime advantage and played the second half without their first-team starters.
In one half of work Johnstown senior quarterback Gervon Simon ran for two touchdowns and threw for three more.
“That’s what we wanted to do, come out there and set a statement early and hopefully get up on them early,” said Simon, who completed 8 of 11 passes for 175 yards and ran for 40 yards on two touchdown carries.
“Our linemen are amazing. We only had three returning starters, one guy that played jayvee and one sophomore.
“They worked hard throughout camp. They had mistakes in the scrimmages but it looks like they fixed them up.”
Johnstown methodically built a six-touchdown first-half advantage by collecting 13 first downs and 318 net yards of offense in the first two quarters. The Trojans didn’t punt or turn over the ball in the half.
