Central Cambria jolts Johnstown

EBENSBURG — The steady rain and swampy field conditions on Friday night effectively turned into a 12th man for Central Cambria as the Red Devils were able to pull off one of the hugest upsets in the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference this season with a 7-6 win over previously unbeaten Greater Johnstown.

“They say that weather is the great neutralizer,” said Central Cambria head coach Sam Shutty, whose squad won its second in a row to improve to 2-6.

“They (Johnstown) had all the speed and quickness, but we had more experience with conditions like this, and it showed.”

“We’ve had three or four games in the mud like this, and they play mostly on turf.”

Johnstown (7-1) was unable to overcome numerous mistakes, including six turnovers.

“My heart is breaking for our kids right now,” said Trojans head coach Tony Penna Jr.  “They handled the conditions better than we did. We had chances, but couldn’t capitalize on them.”

The normally explosive Trojan offense was limited to just 168 total yards.

“Our defense played their hearts out,” Shutty said. “They wanted this more than any game than I’ve seen this year.”

That strong defensive effort was matched by the Trojans, who held the Red Devils to just 97 yards of total offense.

However, Central Cambria only turned the ball over once, and the Devils made the most of their best drive of the game.

Central Cambria got a break right at the opening kickoff as Johnstown kicker Julian Ter Horst lost his footing on the attempt, and the ball squibbed to the Trojan 49 where it was recovered by the Red Devils’ Scott Bellock.

Jeremy McBreen then bolted for 11 yards and a first down, and three plays later Bellock dashed 20 yards to the Johnstown 1.  McBreen plowed into the end zone on the following play to put the Red Devils on the board, and Austin Crimmins added what proved to be the pivotal extra point to put Central Cambria up 7-0 at the 9:11 mark.

“We knew at some point they would adjust to us, so we had to take advantage of our opportunities,” Shutty said.

What do you think of the Johnstown Tomahawks name for the city's North American Hockey League team?

I like it
I don’t like it
It’s OK since the Jets and Chiefs were not available
I don’t care, hockey in Johnstown does not matter to me.
