Scholastic basketball in brief — Feb. 16

High School Girls

Berlin 75, Turkeyfoot Valley 31

BERLIN – Berlin bolted out to a 29-7 lead after a quarter and rolled to a senior night victory on Tuesday that clinched the WestPAC South championship.

Shelby Coughenour led the Mountaineers (16-5) with

18 points while senior Kristen Hankinson had 16. Erica Craig added 14.

Bishop Carroll 60, Cambria Heights 39

EBENSBURG – The Huskies, led by Dani Link’s

19 points and 13 rebounds, defeated Cambria Heights in a LHAC contest. Gabby Gueguen scored 15 points for host Bishop Carroll.

Danielle Bodek’s 15 points topped the Highlanders while teammate Serafina Bills pitched in 10.  

Windber 70, Blacklick Valley 40

NANTY GLO – Rachel Lovely scored 21 points and grabbed seven steals as visiting Windber beat Blacklick Valley in the WestPAC.

Jill Penatzer added 14 points, five rebounds and four assists while Courtney Petrunak scored 11 for the Ramblers.

Danielle Lesso led Blacklick with 18 points.

Conemaugh Valley 63, Portage 58 (2OT)

PORTAGE – The Blue Jays outscored Portage 14-9 in the second overtime period as they outlasted the Mustangs.

Jamie Cekada’s 13 points led Conemaugh Valley while Jen Percinsky scored 11 points and Courtney McCallay had 10.

McCallay also grabbed nine rebounds while teammate Carly Gruss had eight boards.

Olivia McCabe paced Portage with 24 points and 18 rebounds to go with 11 points and nine steals from Emily Chobany.  

United 50, Northern Cambria 40

ARMAGH – Julie Snyder scored 16 points, Eden Bloom had 15 points and Kelsey Isenberg had 13 as host United beat Northern Cambria.

Ashley Delfonso had 15 points and Kelley Sedlock had 14 for Northern Cambria.

Shade 72, Salisbury-Elk Lick 56

CAIRNBROOK – A pair of double-doubles boosted the Panthers to a win over visiting Salisbury-Elk Lick.

Chelsey Pongrac scored 28 points and tallied 12 steals while Becca Muha poured in

19 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Ashley Manges totaled 12 points and eight assists in the win.

Alayna Harshberger led the Elks with 22 points while teammate Lydia Hale-Cooper scored 15 points. Emily Beitzel contributed 14 points in the loss.   

Cambria C.C. 42, Grier School 34 (OT)

MUNDYS CORNER – Cambria County Christian’s Alexis Wolfe scored seven of her team’s 11 points in overtime of a victory over visiting Grier School.

She finished with 21 points.

Natalie Sokira added 14 points for Cambria County Christian.

Meghan Folmsbee netted 14 points for Grier School.

High School Boys

Bishop McCort 63, Westmont Hilltop 49

Billy Hipp and Nemo Trexler each scored 15 points as Bishop McCort beat visiting Westmont Hilltop in the LHAC.

Patrick O’Reilly had 13 points and Jerqual Wilson added 11 for Bishop McCort.

Zach Drennen led Westmont Hilltop with 17 points and Brady Hamer added 10.

Johnstown 67, Somerset 53

SOMERSET – Quintin

Brandon led the Trojans with 16 points as they defeated the Golden Eagles.

Phillip Madison followed Brandon’s lead on the scoresheet with 15 points while Dwight Andrews scored 13 and Isaiah Haselrig tallied 10.

Eddie Buck had 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead Somerset.

    The AAABA League opens on Tuesday at Point Stadium with two new, but familiar managers, a new but familiar sponsor, an expanded interleague schedule and two new franchises committed to the 2013 season.
    A lot of activity took place during the offseason, including the AAABA national committee’s vote to expand the age limit to 21 years old beginning in 2013.

    Paige Lumley was on an emotional roller coaster and seeing silver on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Richland senior had state record jumps  twice during the triple jump competition, but ended up with a silver–medal leap of 40 feet,
    1¾ inches.
    Defending state champion, second-seeded  junior Lanae Newsome of Brookville, won with a jump of 40-3½.

    Matt Dull finished his athletic career with his best on Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships at Shippensburg University.
    The Chestnut Ridge senior ran a career-best time of 38.12 to finish second in the 300 hurdles final, also setting another school record.
