JOHNSTOWN —
Greater Johnstown claimed its third straight championship in the Mountain Cat Tournament winning Saturday night’s title game of the 34th annual event against Conemaugh Township 75-42 at the Pitt-Johnstown Sports Center.
“Tonight we came out with much more intensity on the defensive side of the ball,” Johnstown coach Neil Cobaugh said. “We preached that defensive intensity in the pre-game shoot around at the high school and we told the kids we wanted them to get after it and shoot the ball. I was really proud of our guys effort.
“For our school, it means a lot to win this tournament. We’ve won three tournaments in a row and had three different MVP’s.”
Four Trojans scored in double figures led by 22 points from Alkwan Williams, who also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
Tournament MVP Phillip Madison and last year’s MVP added 14 points each for Johnstown while Dwight Andrews chipped in with 10 points.
“Winning this tournament is a Johnstown tradition,” Madison said. “We expect to win every year.
“After this game, I thought the MVP award was going to go to our big man, Alkwan Williams. It feels good winning the award, but it feels great to win the championship.”
Johnstown struggled a bit in the opening stanza, but held a 13-10 lead heading into the second quarter.
