MEYERSDALE —
Blacklick Valley’s running game overpowered the Meyersdale Red Raiders in a 42-7 victory on Friday night.
The Vikings gained 397 yards on the ground, including 234 in the first half, when they built a 22-point lead.
John Sheesley led Blacklick Valley with 254 yards on 20 carries during the WestPAC contest. He scored on touchdown runs of 54, 24 and 9 yards.
“Johnny Sheesley was outstanding,” Blacklick coach Bill Zamboni said. “He had a great game. He is so tough in the open field.”
Matt Worthington found the end zone three times, too, on his way to contributing 82 rushing yards. His TDs came from 2, 6 and 25 yards out. Grant Reigel chipped in 72 yards.
“Matty Worthington and Grant Reigel both had solid games, too,” Zamboni said. “When you have over 400 rushing yards as a team, your line is doing good things.”
Together, the group helped Blacklick Valley improve to 1-0.
The outcome dropped the Red Raiders to 0-1.
“We were fundamentally horrible, and that is all on me as a coach,” said Meyersdale head coach Chris Schrock. “We were in better shape and had some missed opportunities early in the game, which got us down mentally; tough as young as we are.”
Meyersdale received a solid individual effort from Gavin Berkley, who covered 92 yards on 26 carries.
The Red Raiders put up their only touchdown when quarterback Lance Leydig connected with Cole Clark on a 45-yard pass with 9:50 remaining in the game.
Leydig, Cole and their teammates will look for their first win of the year when they visit Windber next Friday. Also on Sept. 7, the Vikings will host their first-ever night game at McMullen Memorial Field, which recently had lights installed. They will welcome Rockwood for a contest set to start at 7 p.m.
