Johnstown grad waiting to enroll at Temple

JOHNSTOWN — It doesn’t look like Alkwan Williams will ever get to suit up on a Saturday at Heinz Field.

The Greater Johnstown graduate, who expected to play for the Pitt Panthers until a coaching change and a lack of scholarships led him to commit to Temple, will end up taking a “grayshirt” and sit out the coming season.

Williams said he faced the same problem

with Temple as he did with Pitt.

“It’s because they gave out all of their scholarships they had,” he said.

The linebacker won’t be a part of the Temple program when the Owls play at Pitt on Oct. 27. The Panthers are leaving the Big East for the Atlantic Coast Conference, possibly in time for the 2013 season, meaning that the teams won’t meet on a regular basis.

Williams said that he’ll probably take a class at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College in the fall, then enroll at Temple in January.

The Owls expect to have at least two available scholarships in January, as Richland graduate John Rizzo is following the same course as Williams.

“It is what it is,” Williams said. “It’s going to be more time to get ready for college and working out and everything. There’s good and bad about it.”

He said he’s happy to have another hometown player headed to Temple in Rizzo.

“It’s good that somebody is coming there that I kind of know,” he said. “It’ll be kind of good.”

Williams was The Tribune-Democrat Defensive Player of the Year and a Class AAA all-state selection after making 136 tackles – including 31 for a loss – as a senior.
