JOHNSTOWN — FOOTBALL

Turkey Bowl

in 45th year

The 45th annual Turkey Bowl will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Point Stadium.

The tradition began years ago in the backyards of the Crooks and Dovey families as a game played before the annual Thanksgiving feast.

Eventually, the teams acquired names, the players uniforms and the game rules and officials. The game moved from the backyards to Price Field, Richland’s stadium and the Point.

A Million Dollar Turkey Bowl band debuted in the late 1970s, and cheerleaders and a concession stand appeared.

In 1972, the game became a charity event, and since then has been dedicated to raising money for the Ester Seals Society.

Although admission is free, donations have brought in nearly a half-million dollars.

That milestone is expected to be passed this year.

Lady Cats edged in season opener

ATHENS, W.Va. – Amanda Smith’s basket with 32 seconds to play lifted Concord to a 60-57 WVIAC victory over Pitt-Johnstown Saturday afternoon.

Kaitlynn Fratz poured in 21 points while Jasmine Harper added 14 in her collegiate debut.

Harper scored the Lady Cats' first four points, and Fratz hit a short jumper to give Pitt-Johnstown and early 8-5 lead.
